I got a 2.5 inch tiger oscar yesterday, and as soon as i released him into my aquarium he basically went to the bottom of the tank and then to a corner behind one of the big stones shileded by some artificial plants and has been there for what is now over 24 hrs... i also have a 2 inch bule gourami and a 3 inch cat fish in the tank.
Because he's in one spot for what has been over a day now, he isn't eating either, i guess he's not seeing the food ... anyone got any insight into this topic?

thanks for letting me know
i'm monitoring his progress and would later update the forum as to his (or her) condition
by the way, anyone knows how to differentiate between a male and female oscar?

yesterday morning i noticed that the oscar was close to the surface of the water behind the big artificial plant, and as i walked closer to the tank he sunk into his sulking position at the bottom of the tank shielded by the plant and an artificial castle... so i thought, perhaps he's afraid of me and so doesn't search for food when i drop it in because i normally stick close by to see if he is going to eat before the other fishes gobble up all the food... so this feeding time i dropped in the food and walked away... and i stood at a distance where he couldn't see me and observed. Indeed he approached the surface when he saw the other fishes eating something and even moved to the center of the tank eating along with the others... since this morning he's no longer perched at the bottom of the tank in his sulking position, but instead seems quite keen on exploring the tank since he hasn't done so during his first few days here. still every time he spots me he sinks back to the bottom, but thank GOD he's up and about
people thanks for all your help
peace

When i first got my oscar he was quite scared of me too, i thought oscars to be a grumpy want to be by themselves type of fish after the first few weeks (i didnt research them at all, just saw the in the petshop) Anyways After a few months he'll start acting like a puppy to you, i can actually pet mine now. Just make sure your LIGHTS ARE LOW. especially that hes new... they dont like bright lights.

hes probably just sulking, but i wouldnt suggest letting him in a tank with gouramis. he will get bigger and see them as food or just chase them around until they die.

Your Oscar is eventually going to grow large (14"), require a 55 gallon tank and eat your gourami. What set-up (tank size, filtration etc.) do you have for it now?

Most oscars pout for the first few days in a new environment. Mine pout when I don't feed them when they beg....they remind me of dogs. Give him/her a few days to adjust...spend a lot of time by your tank so it gets used to you. Good luck and keep us all posted.
