I recently had two bala sharks die on me and they were mixed with african chiclids.I posted a note about their symptoms on this website titled "Bala Sharks w/ african chiclids.
I also have one of those sucker fish and it looks like its dying!
Is it something I'm doing or is it the chiclids because the chiclids look fine.
An aquatic expert told me that african chiclids were the most agressive fish you can buy.
I bought the chiclids the same day I bought the suckerfish and the pet store employee told me the mix of fish would be fine.
PLEASE HELP!

what kind of "sucker fish" is it? there are many many different species and the specific species you have will determine whether it is ok with you cichlids.

Not really sure if they are the Most aggressive. I think some of the new world cichlids are more aggressive. I have tank full of them at 3-5 inches long each, and the most they do is chase each other round the bend sometimes. however, the only other fish I have in with them is a large bristlenose pleco and a multipunctatus catfish (sp?), and the cichlids avoid these like the plague for some reason. LOL. I would not put any other kind of fish in with the cichlids, because why tempt fate? basically, if they don't have barbs in them to protect themselves, they might not be ok (from what I've read). you can't tell from looking, but if you touch a pleco or multipunc, they are sharp. good luck!
another thing, why do think your sucker fish is dying? does it have enough algae to eat? do you feed it algae tablets? plecos will often hide in a dark corner, or under a rock, during the day.
what kind of sucker fish do you have, do you suppose?

Just what type of African cichlid do you have? I would have to say not all African cichlids are that bad but as for mbuna cichlids from lake malawi in Africa these guys are the most aggresive that I have ever seen. I currently keep a johanni II which is a mbuna cichlid that has killed every fish that's been put in with him including four plecos one shark and one oscar. My brother in law had this fish first and he killed off alot of his other African cichlids not sure what kind. That's why he gave him to me the fish the tank and whole setup, it's an octagon. I gave up he's just gonna have to be a loner. I just watch to make sure I don't overfeed him so there's no uneaten food on the btm. of the tank and clean any algea off the glass with a sponge.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I first noticed my cichlids had teeth! They sure looks like teeth, anyway.
the mbunas I keep are 2 red zebras, cobalt zebra, red top zebra, 6 yellow labs (I've read yellow labs are pretty docile).
so far my peacocks (red empress, azureus) and several haps are able to hold their own. The moodiest fish I have in there is also the biggest and is the hap moori blue dolphin. maybe a lot of hiding places helps.
