I got my betta about 4 weeks ago. He has been doing fine, happy, blowing bubble nests, etc. For the past 4 days though, he has been spitting out his food. I feed him Hikari Bio-Gold Betta pellets. He is still swimming around a lot and his fins aren't clamped or anything. He is still blowing his nest too. What could this be? I am afraid he will starve to death. Thanks.

Hello bubbles1, it sounds like your fish is fine. He's still happy blowing bubbles, he's just sick and tired of the same old meat and potatoes. Try giving him some Tetramin flakes or some brine shrimp or something to vary his diet. Fish are like people. They like a little change to. I love a good sirloin steak, but if I ate it every night for four weeks I'd be spitting it out to.

Thank you for the reply! I forgot to mention (of course) that I've also tried feeding him freeze dried bloodworms and he WANTS to eat them (he gets very excited) but he spits them out too. He managed to keep a small part of one down this morning...could he have a stomach infection? I read that somewhere...Thanks again.

Hi bubbles1, Possibly that, or possibly constipation. You might try giving him some small pieces of leaf spinach or romaine lettuce to relieve constipation. Peas are supposed to be especially good for that but you might have a hard time getting them small enough for him to eat without making a mess in the tank. If that doesn't work you might look further into a stomach infection. He doesn't appear to be in any immediate danger if he is still nest building. Let me know how he does.
