I've always done everything by the book (Noga) to know avail. Firstly, my large Oranda developed Dropsy and Ick. All fish now have Ick. (within a day) I keep a 50 gallon .3% saline water tank. Water changes regularly, two filters running, change carbons opposite each other to help keep good bacteria. Steady aeration and steady water temp. 74 degrees. Fish: 1 large Black Moore, 1 large Oranda, 1 baby black moore, 1 baby oranda, 2 small Ryukins. I know my tank is not big enough for all large, when they grew bigger I was going to transfer to a second new tank. Fish started out good to standard medication treatments. I even slowly adjusted water temp to 80 degrees. Then, after 3 days of treatment a change, they started huddling in a corner at bottom, non responsive unless I poke at them. Did 50% water change and started carbon filtration again. Oranda must have so weak it slipped into my syphon tube, I didn't notice till the water stopped filling the pail. I released it back into tank, I had to euthanize her. The others are still huddling in corner, no more deaths though, and they do come looking at meal time. What should I do? When should I restart treatment? Why do I have all the problems and my brother in law who has a small tank with brown water and too many goldfish never have problems! I can't seem to win! Not to mention all the money I spend trying to do everything correct!

I would say your safe to start medicating again. You've done a 50 percent water change so there won't be a build up of medication in the tank. Not sure how you do it or what your book says but when treating anything I always do a small change daily right before I dose the tank. This helps to prevent overdose. It sounds like you might have a fungus in your tank. Ichthlyophthirius is a parasite not related to the dropsy which you said was the original problem. If you weren't medicating the tank when the dropsy popped up I would say it came from a fungus so you have two things to treat. I would not treat them both at the same time though. Treat one then do a large change put carbon back in a week later treat the other. Remember that "ick" has a long gestation period so you'll need to treat it after the symptoms go away or they will survive in the water only to resurface the next time your fish are stressed. Good luck. ------------------ IP: Logged |

James, My Large Black Moore is all stredded up now and it looks like his body is just disolving he has reddness all under him. I can't believe he's still alive, He has pulled out before so I am still having some hope. the others are still just huddling at bottom. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi TonyS, There are a couple of points here regarding your routine I'm not sure of so I'll try to go over a couple of things. Most everything you mentioned is correct. My biggest question is how are you doing your water changes? Dropsy is caused from bacteria. Ick is caused from rapid temperature change or bacteria. When you do your water changes you should be siphoning the water from the bottom to remove waste from the gravel. Also the water you add to the tank should be within + or - 2 degrees of the tank water. From all indications both problems are bacterial. Mardel makes a line of meds for bacterial and parasite problems that can be used together safely (Maracide, Maracyn, Marcyn II, etc). Over the years I have used them together and they work very well. With as many problems as you are having you might want to consider leaving the tank where it is and throw the @#$96!96& book out the window and find a better book. I'm not sure what book you are using. IP: Logged |
