If u have fish that are shy or even if you want fish 2 come out of hiding when you want them to, i would consider doing this. A while ago, my friend told me about a way of making fish not so shy, and me having very pirahnas and cichlids, decided to give his method a try. every-time you are about to feed them, tap on the glass lightly for about 5 seconds, then distribute the food into the tank. After about a week of doing this, the fish will not be afraid of any movement by their tank. Also, whenever you are telling people about your fish, you can just tap on the glass and out come all of your fish being very active. I have had VERY good success with this method. My Red belly's were afraid when-ever i walked by them, now they look at me with curiosity at the front of the tank. I Hope this works to cure your fish from being shy.

I always heard from various fish stores that tapping on the tank can somehow cause the fishes lungs to collapse. I heard it a very long time ago but it was from two reputable stores. If this is true I can't imagine it being very good in the long term.

fish got lungs? not many. Lightly tapping the glass before feeding will not hurt your fish. what is being described is a standard Pavlovian response Done patiently and consistently, any animal (people included), not just fish, can be trained this way.

IMO, it's not good to tap on the glass of the aquarium. Have you every been in a bathtub with your head under the water and had somehting bang against the side? It's quite loud. And fish also have sensory pits and lateral lines which detect vibrations in the water. So I'm sure constantly tapping on the glass really irritates the heck out of the fish.

I keep a few tanks in public schools, and very light tapping on the aquarium canopy has worked very well for me. The tapping brings all of the fishes out for feeding time and in no way bothers them. It has even prevented stress, as they regularly come face to face with students in the hall. From my understanding, it is very bad to tap or hit the glass.

HI,
Tapping on the glass of the acquarium for fishes like Severums is really dangerous, As i tried this long back and got one of my Severums injured really badly, but now he is OK.

But for aggressive ones like Oscars it did not make a difference i believe.
