Hello, i ama college freshman and i just got my first Betta Fish. I live on the other side of the countryand eventually i am going to have to go home for a long amount of time. Is there any safe way to get my fish home? I thought about taking the fish on the airplane with me - in a nalgene bottle. Any thoughts? IP: Logged |

seems like it ought to be ok, thats pretty much how they ship them to the stores in the first place (cept they do it in much smaller containers. IP: Logged |

You would not want to see what I witnessed at a Petco recently. While my husband and I were there seeing which fish to take home, I happened to go over to the counter and take a peek into one of those styrofoam coolers, yes, that exact kind. And, inside was a horrible sight, about 20 baggies of bettas inside and the little baggies they were in were about 3" long and 2" wide!! I was sickened. I picked one up and the poor fish inside was covered in filth. He was in about less than 1" of water loaded with his own feces. The thought of this experience still sickens me. I had the woman take the fish out of the bag because I wanted to rescue one of them, and when she did I saw very small pinholes in his beautiful tail fin. These pinholes, I have been told are from the ammonia in that water! So, now I know why I can never keep these beautiful fish alive and well for very long .... BOOOO to Petco and to whoever their source is for bettas, they could care less about them as long as they make their money. IP: Logged |

Petco has diseased fish. period. I have never bought a fish at petco that didn't end up diseased and dead within weeks. and once even took out my entire tank with it the fish are overpriced to boot. I have had very good luck with petsmart fish, however. Of course the very best fish I've gotten has been at a "small" local store. I love that place. IP: Logged |

Wal-mart is worse than pet-co, thats where i rescue all of my betas from, they live 4 a very long time, if u take care of them right. U need 2 make sure u notice fungus and buy the correct medicine. I currently have 9 betas frum there, and they r all VERY healthy! (except 4 1 who just got town up by the 1 i tried 2 mate it with!) IT just depends on how u take care of them. b sure 2 either use bottled drinking water @ room temp. or warm tap water w/ the correct amount of dechlorinator when u change the water. They also like a variety in their diet. My fish get 2 types of pellets, 1 type of flakes, and sum bloodworms every other night. Occasionaly u will come across a fish who doesn't like the whole diet though. U really can make these fish live awhile, i have 1 from wal-mart who lived 3 yrs. it all depends on the care they receive frum YOU! IP: Logged |
