I don't know much at all about fish or health problems they can experience. I have a red-bellied piranah that is probably 2-3 years old. It is having breathing difficulties. I noticed yesterday that is was gulping and has a white film on the outer edge of one of it's gills. I have a really clean tank and a nice, new filtration system. I put some liquid bacteria and fungus killing medicine in the tank and some stress formula. I tested for chlorine, ammonia etc. I covered the tank for privacy because he was "hiding". I didn't know if anyone might know what is wrong with him, or if anyone had suggestions of something more I could do. Thank You! IP: Logged |

From your description it doesn't sound like you needed the liquid bacteria. Your description sounds like a fungus. If you don't have any aquarium salt in the tank, you could add aquarium salt at 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons of water. NON-iodized ice cream salt will work just as well at the same dosage. Tank temperature should be at 80 degrees for medications to work best. You could also increase the oxygen flow to the tank. If all of your readings on your water checked out OK, I would take a water sample to your local fish store and get them to test it to make sure the water is OK. When test chemicals get old they don't always give an accurate reading. Even if you bought them last week you don't know how long they sat on the shelf in the store. I bought a nitrite test kit once and the reagents were bad when I bought it. Good luck with your RBP. IP: Logged |
