bettas get mistaken for "killer fish" or "fighting fish" but are quite peacefull. they will go with almost any fish, exept aggressive fish that wont go with them. but if there are and fancy tailed fish then they might get nipped being mistaken for another betta.

You basically want to stay away from fin nippers like barbs and some tetras. They also tend to not get along with other fish that have long flowing fins like fancy guppies and some gouramis because they mistake them for other bettas. But with a big tank like that, it may be less of a problem.

bettas like small places, so unless your fish are very aggresive, and small, a betta might feel good.

P.S. Bettas like really small habbitats, so they might feel uncomfortable, too.

betas Like smarll hapitats???!!!?!! i had a beta in my 20 gal tank with some guppys and he loved it prancing around showing off all his fins!! they only tolerate the small places becuse in their nateral enviroment the water drys up and they live in small puddles and thats also why they can breath Air. becuse they eveolved to survive dry seasons in puddles i think puting a male beta in a larger tank would make it happy after it ajust to the change from the tiny bowl!!! !!!!! lol maby you have had a weird beta

I agree with cichlids small Jaws. I've kept bettas in 10 gallon tanks and never had a problem.

The belief that bettas prefer small places is nothing but rubbish meant solely to make people feel better about torturing their fish by keeping it in a container that is much too small. IMO, a betta should have AT LEAST 2 gallons, but more is always better.

Bettas can do well in a 2 gallon tank. They can also do well in a 20 gallon. In either case, it's important to have plenty of cover (preferably real or plastic plants). These are "ditch fish" in there home environments so think shallow, still water with lots of vegetation and overhang. The biggest problem with a larger community tank is ensuring enough filtration for the community without producing a strong current that can damage the bettas fins.

Bettas are adapted to breathing air because they live in still, stagnant water. Without surface agitation it's difficult for air to diffuse and hence the labrynthe organ. It's recommended to have a lid in dry climates to keep the air above the water surface moist and approximately the same temperature (as opposed to dry and colder than the water temp.)
