I just bought a 29 gallon tank.

1)I'm using and undergravel filter and with a powerhead as well as a filter that hangs of the top of the tank (not sure what it's called). Is that over kill?

2) I set up the tank 2 days ago. I added stress coat, stress zyme, ammo lock and about 4 TB of salt. This afternoon I have tested the water to see my tap waters "natural tendencies" (w/ minor chemical intervention). Here are the results:
PH - 7.4
Ammonia - 0 PPM
Nitrate - 0 PPM
Carbonate/KH - 12 DKH/ 214.8 PPM
Hardess/GH - 10 DGH/ 179PPM

The temperature naturally stay between 76 - 78 degrees (w/o a heater).

I'm am trying to pick fish that go best with my local water (after it has beem sitting and treated with the above.) I don't want to mess with the PH constantly, water hardness, etc.) So I want fish that will do best in the above conditions.

I would like colorful fish, temperment is no big deal. I would consider guppies and tetras, etc all the way to Cichlids). I'm just trying to have a beautiful, active, semi-low maintenance tank. Any recommendations?

Woah...a leporinus and rainbows??? The leporinus is no where near low maintence. They only eat frozen food, which can get expensive.

If you want active fish, go with tetras and the like. Emperor tetras are beautiful and active schoolers, and they get to be about 2.5 to 3 inches a piece. They don't tend to have the aggressive tendancies that rainbows do. Cory cats, another schooling fish, clean the bottom of uneaten food and come in a variety of types, my favorite being the panda corys. Another good, colorful active fish are the harlequin raspboras. If you feed them paprika, their red color really shines. Toss some lemon tetras in there and you'll have a nice mix.

With your water conditions, chiclids wouldn't be wise, because they like a pH of around 8.0.

Hello daizygirl999,
1) It's not overkill, it makes for a well filtered tank.
2) Your water is well suited for almost anything you wish to put in the tank. Don't try to set up a chemical tank by continually trying to adjust PH and hardness. You won't be able to keep it balanced if you do. After your tank has cycled out it will probably balance at about 6.8 to 7.0 on PH. The main reason for a heater is to keep the temperature constant.
3) With a 29 gallon it would be best to stock it with relatively small fish. A wide assortment of Tetras would make a nice tank. What I like to set up with a tank that size is dark colored Anglefish like Black Lace Veiltail Angels contrasted by Silver Dollars with a lot of greenery. Contrary to what some people believe Angels and Silver Dollars do go well together.
No matter what you put in the tank there will be some maintenance necessary (weekly water changes).

Well I have to say that I am partial to rainbows, but they aren't the cheapest fish around, if that's a factor. I also like clown loaches and some of the cory cats are really neat too (these are frisky bottom feeders, but will swim all over the place). Also love siamese algae eaters SAE. fun, active, peaceful.
I also like pearl gourami. they are hardy, grow fast to about 4", graceful, beautiful, but not fast swimmers. males can fight, so I have one female and one male.
here's a pic of my rainbow tank from the past, that is now an african cichlid tank. I have a 55 and a 37. my 37 is general community tank now. http://home.austin.rr.com/maughan/fish.html
No matter what you go with, you'll have fun and a great learning experience!

Thanks everyone. I'm still waiting for my tank to finish cycling. I've been browsing for fish to see what I like. I saw the Rainbows today and really liked them. I also like Clown Loaches but I hear they get big. What do you reccommend with Rainbows that won't get huge?
