Ok, 2 things here. First I have a new tank I'm gonna set up and was wondering which would work better. One of the hang-over-the-back style filers or a UG filter? In my current tank I have one of the over-the-back ones and I've never tried a UG before. Aight 2nd, in my current tank I have 2 irr. sharks and 3 balas. My balas have never been really skiddish by any means. Lately one of the balas, the biggest one, has taken to the irr. sharks. It swims with them, is just as skiddish as them, etc. Any ideas why? As far as the filters go I would def. go with hanging filter but a ug filter does give you alot of extra filtration that the hanger misses. So its not a matter of which works best its just a matter of you wanting the extra filtration or not. If I was you then yes I would use both. IP: Logged |

layinlow, I generally run UGs and outside filters on my tanks. I like the biological effect of the UGs. The problem that you can run into with UGs is bacterial overload from waste building up under the UG. To help overconme that problem, besides the 20% water change once a week I also stir up the gravel and run a Diatom filter once a week. Hope this helps answer your question about filtration. Fish-Noobie, a 10 gallon tank is a little small for 2 Irridescent Sharks and would be way overloaded by adding Bala Sharks. [This message has been edited by kc5gvn (edited 07-31-2003).] IP: Logged |

the best combo of filters i've come up with on a freshwater is to have a filter, one that hangs on the back of the tank, hooked up to one of the up tubes on the undergravel. that way all the waste that sucks through the rocks doesn't make your ph and alkalinity go crazy, the carbon in the top filter takes care of that. only problem is that you have to change the carbon about once a month, so it does get a little pricey IP: Logged |
