I tried putting my female and male together, but the female was biting the male, and tearing his fins. When she bit, she would latch on. When he would get her to let go, he would go regroup under his bubble nest, then she would be at him again a few seconds later. I seperate them, becuase I noticed soem blood. Is that normal behaviour? I am a first time breeder!

Yah, the males do that, but Females can be kept together (unless they are agressive, that female is now kept in a tank seperate from teh others).

After a courtship of some 6 months our little girl betta turned the tables on the 'showoff' male just the other day.

He had grown very full, flowing fins and tails and with a water change I had reversed the position and placement of his favourite 'tree' toy. She was now in his territory and for some reason became vicious.. sneeking under him and grabbing the fins, pulled and ate them!

I thought at first he had got stuck and ripped, but on observation it was her turning the tables. He would chase her and when his back was turned she would latch on and RIPP! He cowered in the corner...

Suffice to say he is 1/3 fin size he was and it has started to grow back only because he is now seperated by a glass wall.

They both want to go back together... but I am reluctant to allow them.

As my friend said... she became the 'bitch from hell'

An update on the fin re-growing process:

Felix has regrown his fins, although the colour has not fully returned and the length is shorter.

Moral of the story, don't let them get too badly eaten!

hmmm...I have a female betta and was considering putting a male in there with her. Are you saying not to because I thought male and female did get along with one another-- you just werent suppose to put two males together?

nope! the male and female DON'T get along together, unless I guess they are both mild mannered. I wouldn't put them together as the female could get pregnant, they could mate, and you could have lots of little fishy's! However, based on my experience with my attempt at breeding these last few months, it might not happen. All that my bettas are interested in doing is getting pregnant, eating, builing bubbles nests, and most of all, GETTING SICK!
