I have one male and one female molly in a 10 gallon tank. Last Thursday I noticed there are 8 babies. How cute they are! I immediately isolated the babies by putting them in the fish net. Today, as I have been reading through the old posts on this board, I am realizing I have so much to learn. A few people mentioned mollies like salt in their water. How much do I add, and how often do I add it? Should I remove the filter for a bit after adding the salt? Also, if these babies survive, what will I do with them? I read there are nurseries available, so I will pick one up. But these fish will grow, and I can't keep all of them in this tank. Will the pet stores take the babies or do I just leave them to die?(Please don't tell me to let them die) Also, I read other mentions of food types to feed the fish. I have always fed my fish flake food and that is it, should I make changes? Do you have other information that a novice might need to know? IP: Logged |

Yes, Mollies need salt to thrive. You can go to asy store that sells fish and buy aquarium salt. You'd probably want to add one table spoon for every five gallons. Don't worry about removing the filter. And you'd add the appriotate amount of salt when you add new water. Yes, there are nurseries that look like plastic floating bins or really square nets. You'd only want to keep the babies in the there until they are bigger than the parents mouths. They should be able to not get eaten then. Also, you will either need to get baby fish food or grind up the flakes really, really small for the babies to eat and survive. Privately owned pet stores will usually trade fish or take them for free, but don't expect any money for your babies. Try to give them to people you know with tanks. However, this will keep happening. I know you don't want to just let them die, but let natural selection take over. Mom and Dad will usually munch on the babies if they have no where to hide. This will help your tank not become over crowded in a matter of months. IP: Logged |

I have a molly that just gave birth. We have the babies iosolated and they are doing fine. My problem is: the male seems to be very amorous since the birth and the mother doesn't seem happy about it. Is this normal? She seems very "down" and the male just will not leave her alone. IP: Logged |

"A few people mentioned mollies like salt in their water. How much do I add, and how often do I add it?" Make sure you only add salt when you do a water change. Don't add salt if you just top off the water and don't remove any water. Salt does not evaporate so if you add salt to top off your salinity will get to high. ------------------ IP: Logged |
