i have a two part question:
1. my daughter has been bothering me to get her own fish, so for her birthday i got her a 2 gallon tank setup. set it up did the proper waiting and what not. got her a fantail goldfish(its what she wanted) it was doing fine untill about a week ago the gold on him started to turn black and it was still eating and active.
This morning it was dead. any ideas?
2. My Pacus are constantly moving the plants around (not a problem) what does bother me is the keep bumping into the heater knocking it almost into the tank. Ive read stories were pacus have broken heaters and been electrocuted. Is there somthing on the market to shield heaters or any ideas of ho i can do it myself if there is nothing out there. i dont want to lose my pacus.

Don't know the answer on goldfish problem. Still trying to figure out a Pacu in a 2 gallon tank???? As far as unbreakable heaters, they make titanium heaters. Just do a websearch on titanium heaters.

i got a plastic heater cover thats thick and black, it protects the heater from breaking, ask pet stores for them, they should be easy to find*i think*

Okay, I'll be the first to do it. This is what your pacus are going to grow into:

A full grown pacu will barely fit into a 75 gallon tank (I mean that literally). If you still want to keep them, you're going to need at least a 500 gallon tank. And possibly bigger depending on the number of pacus you have.

As for the heater, I also suggest a titanium one.

Now for the goldfish. Simply waiting a while before adding fish to a tank is NOT the proper thing to do. Before adding your fish, you have to cycle the tank. Read this for further info: http://www.tomgriffin.com/aquamag/cycle2.html

Since your tank is not cycled, like cichlids small Jaws said, the ammonia levels are probably off the scale and the fish is suffering from ammonia burn.

Now, even if the tank were cycled before you added the fish, a 2 gallon tank is too small for a goldfish. Goldfish are a type of carp and as such get quite large. An adult fantail can get up to 6" long and will barely fit into a 2 gallon tank (again, I mean that literally). And anything you heard about fish growing to the size of thir tank is pure rubbish.

Goldfish are also incredibly messy fish and a 2 gallon tank simply cannot handle the bioload of a goldfish. You really need at least a 10 gallon aquarium for that goldfish. If you try to keep it in the 2 gallon, it will die.

For the goldfish, you have 2 options. You can return the fish, cycle the tank, and get something more appropriate for a 2 gallon tank like a betta. Or you can go out right now and buy a tank that is AT LEAST 10 gallons. Since the goldfish is already suffering in the 2 gallon, you don't have time to cycle the 10 gallon. Instead, you can take some of the filter media from the (hopefully) established pacu tank and add it to the filter of the 10 gallon. That should provide enough bacteria to handle most of the ammonia produced by the goldfish and if anything, it will only go through a minicycle. I would also add an airstone because high levels of ammonia will scar a fish's gills and make it harder for them to breath. Having higher amounts of oxygen in the water will help.

Mr red-devil, they get the same size in a tank, or the wild. Just very few people have a big enough tank not to stunt them.

Big ole wrong on the tank vs fish size. A tank does not keep a fish smaller, just stunts them. And that is not a good thing.

As for being an old post, who cares? If your done with it, possibly myself and others are interested in the topic, and would like to discuss something else along the lines.
