Awhile back, my boyfriend and I bought four tiny oscars not knowing how big they would actually get.

If anyone in the Corpus Christi area has at least a 55 gallon tank and would like to take two of our tiger oscars off of our hands (for free) that would be great.

The larger the fish is the more it costs to buy wholesale. If your fish is getting too large for your tank, talk to your local pet shop. Most pet shops will be more than happy to give you the wholesale price for your fish. It saves them the box fees and shipping charges. They like it even better if they take your large fish in trade for some smaller fish. It's kind of a win, win situation for you and the shop.

It's funny that you would say that, because none of the pet stores around here are willing to pay us for the oscars.

Did you ask them about taking them in trade for smaller or juvenile fish? By taking them in trade the shop is getting nearly double what they would by buying them wholesale and retailing them out. When I ran shops in the Dallas area I looked forward to those types of trades. The only reason I can think of for a shop not to jump at the offer is they must be overstocked on that particular fish or do not have the tank space available.

You might try placing an ad in one of the local freebe newspapers like Greensheet or Thrifty Nickle.

Here are general guidelines on shipping.
The fish are bagged in plastic bags just like they are when you buy them from a shop, except instead of just trapping air in the bag oxygen is pumped into the bag. On fish that stressed easily we placed the first bag inverted into a second bag to keep the fish from getting into the corners and stressing out. On fish that really stressed we also added tranqualizer to the water. The plastic bags are then placed in a styrofoam box with a styrofoam lid. Depending on the fish and time of year a heatpack or coldpack might be taped to the inside of the styrofoam box. The stryrofoam box is then set inside a cardboard shipping box and shipped out. Not very dramatic but that is about the way it works.

Try bringing it to a lake and letting the darn thing go... your not going to find anyone to pay you for that fish, there is so many big oscars out there that a pet shop normally wont take them in for adoption, I know this because I used to work for a pet supply "plus" and I now work at a PetCo in NY... Either over feed it and kill it or bring it to a lake... or just cook the darn thing... knowone will take it from you... sorry

there's no need to argue about who will take a fish and who won't but to prove the point i used to own an oscar myself but decided to buy 2 larger ones and i realized after i bought the large tank and the other fish that my smaller one wouldn't have enough room to grow.i had allready given my smaller tank away.so i took him to the pet shop where i had bought my larger ones and they bought him.but i ended up missing him and buying him back along with another tank of course. but the point is pet shops will buy oscars.maybe the pet shops where you live had all the fish they needed at the time you were there
