Help! I bought 3 balas about a month ago. They all were fine until about a week ago, the smallest died. No symptoms. Woke up and it was sunk at the bottom of the tank. Now, the medium sized bala of the 3 has this weird growth on its mouth. It looks like the mouth has just been stretched out or something. There isn't a spongy look to it and none of my other fish have anything weird. The main reason I am so concerned is because when I was buying them, one of the balas at the pet store looked like that. The lady said I didn't want that one, but never said what it was! I don't know what to do.
Currently there is one sick bala, a seemingly happy bala, 3 neons, 2 red fish (don't know what they are exactly, they were orphans and needed a loving home) and one pleco.
I don't want them to die! Please help!

From your description it's hard to tell but if it's what I think it is, after about a week it will become ulcerated. I've never been able to find this particular disease, but I believe it to be a parasite called flukes. I had it with one of my Firemouth Cichlids. After trying different parasite and fungus medications with no change in the condition of my Firemouth I increased the salt content of my tank which cleared up the problem. No other fish in the tank were affected by this disease. Considering how overcrowded that tank is it is apparently not very contageous.

Well, thank you for giving me your insight into what is happening with my bala. As for your rude comment about my tank, I am offended. You didn't ask what size tank I have and don't know. There is more than enough room for all of my fish. I am sad to see that my first experience with this website had to be such a bad one. I won't be coming back.

First off the overcrowded tank I was refering to was mine if you paid attention to my statement. I was trying to offer you some advice on something you apparently didn't know anything about. Second, if you can't handle the answer don't ask the question!

I agree with Kgeise01, I also found Kc5gvn rather rude in giving her opinions.I also found you very closed minded as to your answers being the only correct ones. As for my Bala Shark that you diagnosed with Septacimia....it is still alive and has survived this fatal disease three times with no intervention. What are your qualifications, I notice none on your profile. What a shame for Kgeise01, come back!

First, I am a male not female. In regard to qualifications, I have had tropical fish for 32 years. I also have 13 years experience managing two different pet shops and one tropical fish wholesale, although it's been a few years since I have been in the business end. If those aren't enough qualifications then seek other advice than a forum such as this. You apparently also do not read things thouroughly, from your statement, "I also found you very close minded as to your answers being the only correct ones". If you will look my statement was, "From your description it's hard to tell but if it's what I think it is...". Since you have a problem with answers I might have to help you, I will make a note not to respond to any questions from you. I came on this board to try and help people with problems they are having with their fish. I've got enough experience I don't have any problems with mine. If they don't want my help it just gives me more time for my other persuits.
