Just to clear some confusion up, piranhas eyes do not dilate and are sensitive to light. They use distance and water depth to regulate light intensity. When light is too bright, the piranhas eye receptors become overloaded and it moves under shade or to deeper water to control the light intensity. To prove this I asked a fish expert if, "piranhas eyes can dilate to let less light in when there is a bright light source", and he replied that "I'm not aware of any fish species that are able to regulate light by varying the size of their pupils. Most fish are adapted to live in environments with much less light than terrestrial species, so their eyes are designed to capture the maximum amount of light." Clay L., Assistant Leader (Fisheries) Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management Just wanted to clear some things up that certain people thought..."piranhas are in water and water breaks up light beams," this is true but their eyes DONT DILATE and too much light can damage their eyes!
