I have a 55 gal tank and three 2.5 in Tiger Oscars. I have only one pleco (algae eater) and wondered if more were necessary?

You could get more, but need? The pleco will keep glass and rocks clean of algae, but their cleaning capability is over rated.
They are cool to look at, but make sure and place any new fish in a quarantine tank for a week or two. You have to make sure they are healthy before adding.

Just one thing about plecos they don't eat poo they eat algea and leftover food it doesnt matter what kind of fish you get it matters what your water is like!
