I have a couple of 5" oscars along with a few other tank mates in a 55 gallon (grow out) tank. Both the Oscars have daveloped long scrapes on their heads that continue to their backs, but are eating and behaving normally. Has this ever happened to anyone? could it be a kind of stress? if so, what can i do to treat them and/or get them to stop hurting themselves? IP: Logged |

is it literally along the backbone? or is it more on the sides? what kind of Deco do you have and what "mates" are in the tank with them? My oscars have a bad habit of jumping up at the hood which has caused some damage on the head, but it's going away. Plus when i changed tanks and tried to get them into a bucket the scales were scraped up a bit, but with a salt bath, they heal quickly and prevent health problems.... I'd take a close look at your deco for sharp edges or sides, as well as your filter head, where the water gets sucked up, they may be scraping across that.... IP: Logged |

theres nothing too sharp in there, just a cave, rainbow rock and a bunch of plants of various sizes. i added salt when i first noticed the wounds, and they healed right up. The Oscars are grouped with a verry calm Jack Dempsey, Severum, a 3" Green Terror, a 5" clown knife, a Salvini, and a pleco. I know a 55 is way too small for these guys at full size, but plans of getting a 125-150gal are in the near future. I think the wounds were from them jumping at the surface, i had them trained to jump over the divider in the 55 gal for krill untill an oscar mis-judged, and landed in my dresser drawrer!
