Thanks for your help. My Oscars still seem to be doing well. My Ammonia level is 0ppm, but my nitrite level is still elevated. I have Nitro-Zorb in the filter, we'll see how that works.

Nitrates are caused by waste....either food that's not being eaten, especially decaying live food, but pellets can cause it as well, or waste not being cleaned up properly...

You should do a water exchange, about 30%

grab your siphon if you've got one and suck out 30% of the tank water, and refill it, put in some stress coat and be sure to change your filters.......

keep an eye one it, you MAY want to do it again in a week just to make sure......

Be sure to clean out all the waste in teh tank, dead fish, uneaten food, or fish waste...take a look at the deco, make sure that's clean as well, you may want to take it out, scrub it, and not put it back in untill the level goes down...

do you have anything else in the tank? like a placo to help with cleanup? that would help a little too.

I know how you feel, I have one word for you
ZEOLITE. The best stuff I've used. add 1/4 cup of zeolite per 10 gallons and within a month, every bit of ammonia and nitrite is gone. remove carbon also. having carbon out for a month is not a big deal, JUST KEEP YOUR FILTER ON. and if you have one filter it wont hurt to buy another and make it a bio filter if you want to. good luck.
