Could a single Pacu be kept in a 55 gal tank or would it get to large to turn? I believe the tank is 12" deep, 36" long, and 24" tall. Close to those measurements at least. IP: Logged |

You're probably going to need a 700 gallon tank when all is said and done. IP: Logged |

55 gallons is perfect for an adult pacu. don't listen to that non sense. As long as do constant water changes and maintain biological filtration you'll be a ok. I have a full grown red pacu in my 55 and he is very happy and he's been in there for 7 years! IP: Logged |

Finally!!! someone who share my opinions on tank sizes! i agree that a 700 gallon aquarium for a Pacu is Insane, but at the same time, a 55 might be a little small. (a normal 4-person hot-tub is around 400 gallons) i wouldnt keep a black pacu in less than a 75-90 gallon just for the extra width over a 55. But a red-bellied Pacu might last a while in a 55 . . . or atleast untill it reaches 11-12 inches, which should buy you some time to get a bigger tank down the road. IP: Logged |

I realize this thread is a year old, but I feel I must respond in order to educate the uninformed that happen across this thread while searching the net. I find it extremely pathetic that you dismiss Fishman2's advice as non sense and then procede to give some of the most irresponsible advise I have ever heard. Do you two really believe that an aquarium of 55-90 gallons is adequate for a fish that will easily reach over 30" and weigh more than 50 lbs.? A 700 gallon aquarium is a perfect size aquarium for a pair of Pacu. And truthfully a 500 gallon should be the absolute minimum. I have seen enough battered and stunted Pacu that were kept in 100-200 gallon aquariums to know that a tank of this size is no where near suitable. After having adopted a large 22" pacu that was kept in a 150g for 5 years, it became a goal of mine to educate as many people as possible on the proper care of Pacu. Its people like you jam500 and illwill, that help to fuel the sale of these massive fish to unprepared beginners. You would not keep a cat locked in a small carrier for ints entire life, so why would you force such as huge and impressive creature as the Pacu to live in such a tiny enclosure? Its the worst kind of animal abuse possible and nothing less than cruel. Rex rex@cichlidforums.com IP: Logged |

Wow, I have heard some crazy things, but I will tell you this. I have two Red-bellied Pacu's (over ten years old each) and a Jack Dempsey in the same tank. A 40 high and they are happy as can be, though they are shy fish and are afraid of rapid movement that accures outside the tank. They play with each other and leave the jack alone. They also are known to watch t.v. Fish emit a hormone that allows them to grow to the size of their environment. I truly believe this when my Pacu's stopped growing. My largest is a foot long and the other is 8" long, they have been that way for 7 years. I have limited "clutter" in my tank and clean it every month (with weekly water adds when needed) I don't overfeed, but rather underfeed(especially when the temperature drops) and they are very healthy with only a couple of nips in the tail and fins from "play". This thing about a 700 gallon tank, it would not even fit in my house, and I have a large house. I don't know, do what you feel comfortable with. Like I said I have living proof in my house that Red-bellied Pacu's can live in something smaller then a 300 gal.aquarium and be quite happy. Good Luck! p.s if I could afford larger, I would, but this is where I stop when it comes to investing in fish!!! IP: Logged |

I am completely exasperated at this point. Why do they sell these fish to people then that do NOT have the adequate holdings for them? When I purchased my fish in '94 they never told me more then "yep, it will get pretty big, and yep your tank is fine" So that said I went with it and bought the fish. I do not feel under educated when it comes to fish care. I have studied and read a lot about it and have been an aquarist for 14 years now. These fish have never been sick and are not undernoursished. Someone I know who is more knowledgeable about fish health informed me that they are very healthy and not under-weight. I don't wish to have anyone BASH me for how I care for my fish, I do not see this as animal abuse, they are fish, and yes it is my pet, and yes when they die I will be sad, but this is working for me and for many others out there. So please do not call me ignorant, I am actually fairly intelligent. Thank you for reading. Now, I do have a question, my roommates feel that these fish will eat goldfish. I beg to differ! They dumped a dozen feeders in and my fish have not touched them, they are actually afraid of them. UGH! Bring on the GRAPES and Spinach!!!! IP: Logged |
