I just bought a baby piranha because I work at a petshop and somebody ordered him and decided not to buy him so I brought him home and I was wondering if he is illegal (to own in New Hampshire) and if I should be feeding him red meat like steak or hamburger. I heard that red meat can add harmful bacteria to the tank and introduce worms into the tank. and what about chicken? meat cooked or not cooked?

The food you need is called beefheart and it is specifically designed for fish. It is treated and cleaned so your fish will not get sick. Feed it, still frozen, to your fish. You can buy it at any good reputable pet shop. I know that Petsmart carries it.

Go to a butcher store or Safeway they sell beefheart in bulk. Semi-freeze and shave off what you need. Just be sure not to use any fat on it. Pet store will sell you a portion triple the cost and you can buy enough beefheart for $2 that can last 2-3 months or longer. Use beefheart as a side dish. Feed them shrimp w/o the shell (cocktail). And cut fish like trout, salmon, smelt, or white fish. Stay away from hamburger to much fat and steak is ok w/o fat and in moderation. Remember P's are primarily fish eaters, so let that be the primary food.

I have started feeding my P's on live River Shrimp.....you get about 10-15 for £1:30.............they are fast, which means the P's have to work to catch them.

The only problem is that they last for only a couple of hours before being Boiled in the Tropical Tank temperature.

well I work at a petstore (that's where I got him) so I can get whatever I want and I get a discount. well he has feeder guppies and tuffies in the tank right now (like 5 of each)and he hasn't even harrassed them. so I should buy him some trout or other fish for him to eat? and what about chicken? I have given him frozen bloodworms and other frozen foods too (except beefheart) and he didn't touch them. he's only like 3-3.5 inches long, just a baby. and should I get him 2 other buddies so I have a small school of 3? he's in a 30 gallon right now but I'm going to get him a 55 gallon this summer (June-July). so is that ok? I'm not new to fish I also have a 10 gal. golfish, 42 gal. bowfront tropical setup, and a 50 gal. african cichlid tank. I'm just not sure on the care of my new piranha.

Red belly piranhas are social creatures and need to be kept in a small school of at least 3 or more. Feed them what they can eat in a 5 min. period. They won't starve to death if they go a few days to weeks without eating. Don't over care for your fish. The leading expert on piranhas said "over care" kills more piranhas than anything else. So just keep it simple. They are hardy fish and can withstand bad care, but just don't over do it.

The magnifacturer rates them as safe. But I know red laser (or pointers) are prohibited in some States for causing temporary blindness in humans if pointed directly into a human eye. I'm not sure I would be convinced enough to trust that product in my aquarium, until I have talked with other people that have used it for a longer period of time than just a few months.
