Thanks for you great pages. They have been very informative. I do have a question for someone out there, however. Can you recommend a treatment for ick other than copper? I hate treating with copper and have not saved a fish yet! Also, I use an isolation tank when treating, but it never saves the fish. I tried whole tank treatment once and it was a disaster. It was impossible to keep the amt. of copper up to the proper dosage for adequate treatment because of the filtering system. Is there nothing out there that can treat the tank without harming the biological status quo? My tank is perfect as far as tests go, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, saline, temp, bacteria, ect. but I still get a fish out of the batch who ends up with ick. So far I have lost three puffers and now a hippo tang is looking suspicious but he is feisty and eating great and seems to be quite happy. But, I don't want to wait until he starts acting sick to treat, but I don't want to isolate either and start the copper. It just seems to hard on the fish and doesn't help either. I certainly don't want to stress him out by moving him to an isolation tank full of copper! So....I hope you can help. Thanks.....Sandy IP: Logged |

Someone once mentioned increasing the water temp to above 80 to solve a problem with Ick. If not, many fish stores have medicine specialized for Ick. I hope this helps... [This message has been edited by scorpiocasper (edited 01-27-2003).] IP: Logged |

I don't blame you. I don't use copper unless absolutely necessary. The biggest problem with copper is that it goes dormant in a tank and can be reactivated when you go to treat your fish at a later date causing them to overdose. Mardel products puts out an excellent cure for Ick called Maracide. What is especially great about their product is that it can be used safely with their fungus medications at the same time. That solves the problem you get with a secondary bacterial infection from the Ick. With Maracide you do not have to increase the tank temperature if it is in range but I would still try to run it at 80 which does help. As far as the continual problem with Ick, it is generally caused by a change in temperature of as little as 2 degrees in a 24 hour period. When you change your water check the temperature of it before you put it in the tank. It should be the same as your tank water or within 2 degrees warmer. Make sure same or warmer, 2 degrees colder will amost guarentee Ick. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |
