Only the male bettas fight. Females can co-habitate. Don't put the female(s) in unless they are egg full. Otherwise the male in his excitement to breed could kill your female by her non-responsive behavior.

I have four bettas, 2 male and 2 female, and I wouldn't put my one pair together because the male and female are extremely aggressive towards eachother and I don't want to deal with hurt fish if I can help it. My other pair I wouldn't be so worried about because they're both very laid back for bettas and don't flare up at eachother or try to get the other through the glass. If you wanted to put them together, I would try letting them see eachother through glass first to get a feel for eachother instead of just throwing them in the tank together and letting them go at it. I wanted to be able to put my females together, but the one is just too aggressive and was constantly after the other even when the other didn't try to fight back or even flare up. It might just depend on the personalities. Also, how big is your tank? If you're going to put them together, the main rule I've heard is to allow 1 gallon per fish to allow them to establish territories and not be constantly at eachother. Hope this helps.

Fishman2 is right! During spawning the male wraps himself around the female and squeezes the eggs out of the female. If the female is not ready to spawn she could be crushed by the male.
