my blue betta fish was given to me last month. and it was doing fine, however when I change it to a bigger tank a few days later, his tail and upper fin starts to drop. it looks like he's been in a fight but he is the only fish in the room! i tried everything, from different medication to changing to different fish tank but somehow his tail seem shorter and shorter every week! besides that he is alright. he still eats like a pig and siwms around whenever my finger come close to the tank is there anywhere i can stop his tail from "tearing"? I read somewhere that bettas were first kept in small glass or ceramic bowls to prevent themselves from tearing and breaking their fins. According to this article, if a betta is allowed to swim too fast the end result is one tattered looking fish. From what I have seen, bettas love to swim fast in aquariums. The use of small bowls seems cruel to some, however mine have lived years in small containers providing I change the water at regular intervals and feed them well. IP: Logged |

you must be careful putting any tropical fish into a new inviernment they will go into ph shock there fins will curl over and act like there going to die. keep the ph between 6.8 7.0 IP: Logged |

Thanks for the replies ![]() humm.. the Ph is around 6-7. But i read somewhere that Betta fishes love lower PH. anyways I'm going to put him in a smaller tank, and see how it goes from there. Wish me LUCK!!!!!!! *smiles* IP: Logged |

He may have fin rot, and Beware to you who keep your bettas in small tanks! They may not be very happy, yah, they are alive, but are they happy? Mine LOVE big bowls, and they don't look tattered, they live in just a gallon. I have only had one fish that was happy in a small bowl, and that was because some pebbles fell on him (he didn't come out with the rest of the water when i cleaned his bowl! Oops!) and so he had a broken back and couldn't get to air in a big one IP: Logged |
