Why does everyone seem to have an infatuation with Pirahna's? Absolutely no offense to Pirhana owners out there, but there are OTHER vicious fresh water fish out there!!!!!

I have a tank of African lake Malawi ciclids (pseudotropheus zebra) that are full grown and they are very agressive and regularly bite themselves. I love pirahna but I hear that the native people of the Amazon have a greater fear of the freshwater stingrays. Their sting is not only painful, but it leaves many fishermen leary of entering the waters for fear of what is right under the sand. Do aquarium stingrays have thier stingers removed before they are sold?

Hey "H" here's a list of some fish that are not only really cool looking but also big time killers...
Any thing in the Arrowana Family (i.e. silver arrowana) These guys get up to several feet long and are super quick (SUPER QUICK) and perpetually super hungry.
Red Devils, which I believe are in the cichlid family, I do not know if they are African or South American. Regardless, they live up to their name.
Red Snake Heads. These guys are one of my favorites. They look just like a snake, just not as long and flowing.
Then there are various cichlids, such as Oscars.
Gars are cool as well, may not be as vicious as arrowanas.
I'd say that the arrowanas and red devils are probably the premier ferocious pet for fresh water. Do some research
Once again, I have nothing against pirhana's, just for you undereducated people out there, there are others that provide gruesome fun!!!

Hi, im new to the forum but I read that you guys were talking about (Why do you need pirhanas as there are other vicious fish out there?) well in one simple answer, you shouldent. If you own a pirhana or even a school of pirhana, or any other fish for that matter, out of need to watch them feed the fish will eventually have a bad fate.. Responsible owners own pirhana because they are affectionate twords the fish not the way they eat(if i didnt have arms or legs i would thrash to rip my food apart to) main point... and im sure youll agree with me... while watching fish feed may be fun, you should never own a fish just because of that fact.... and yes snakeheads are nasty little buggers

I also have a lake malawi a blue one he is by himself due to the fact that he ripped out the eyes of an oscar that later died. The snakeheads are mean but one I have not heard anyone mention is the red devil he lives up to his name I have one full grown male and a juv. female thats growing like a weed.

Anyone who has ever owned a 4+inch black piranha know why the are the most agressive freshwater fish towards tankmates and any other thing that moves? arowanas please, Ive seen them in with tinfoil barbs half its size with no agression towards them at all!Red devils are very aggressive but midas, trimacs, umbee, dovii, True red terrors and some other ones i forgot are way more aggressive. But a black piranha would kill any of those fish with ease. just my .02.

I think you are the Under-educated one! Red devils are not african or south american cichlids. They are central-american cichlids. And oscars dont even make the top 50 most aggressive cichlids.DO SOME RESEARCH

I can think of several reasons. First, in most of the US they are illeagle. That's kind of a big draw in itself. Second, I think most every fish lover loves to have the fish that is difficult to get. It makes for good conversation when you have something rather rare. I can't even begin to count how many times I've been asked if I have Piranha. Third their reputation for aggressiveness preceeds them. You mention Piranha and immediately the image of a full grown cow wandering into Piranha infested waters and being stripped to the bone in 10 seconds comes to mind (never mind all the hype). And last but definately not least they ARE a beautiful fish. Their coloration with the glitter like effect of their skin as it reflects the light in the tank is beautiful. It's no wonder so many fish lovers would like to add them to their collection.

In states where they would be able to survive in our water systems.(flordia,Califonia, texas)there is a lot more states where they are illegal.

Eat a school of piranha,I doubt It. School meaning three or more! Put a 24 inch umbee in with that red-tail catfish and it will be catfish food!

ArrOwAnA, if a Redtail Cat could get as large as an Arapaima I could guarantee "lunch time".

hey a full grown red-tailed cat could destroy a school of 5 piranhas becuase all it would have to do is suck in water and the piranha is lunch and her will keep doing this till he swallows then whole.becuase then a piranha tries to get close the catfish can stun it with his barbels in with in milli seconds suck the fish up like a vacoom

I doubt that a full grown red tail catfish
could swallow a two foot pygocentrus piraya, let alone a school of them. You must be thinkin of the pu**y piranhas, tank raised red bellys. I know you think red-tail catfishs are soooo aggressive, but in truth there not that bad at all, I mean ive seen a few house with way smaller fishes and didnt even go near them.

ArrOwAnA, Years ago I had a Pike. When he was 8" long I watched him work 3 large bass minnows at one time. When I say at one time I don't mean he downed one and went for the next one, he had all three in his mouth at one time. But when it comes to quantity that Pike wouldn't hold a candle to a Redtail Cat. Believe me, I've had both.

i've had a red tail cat in with pacus, oscars, texas cichlids and africans, about the only thing he ever did was splash water out of the tank and break heaters, he even got terrorized by the little pacus (half his size). I've had upside down cats that do better than them in my tanks, and they don't eat as much

k guys, vicious fish = wolf fish the freshwater one not the saltwater one , aka piranha eater, easily chomp a school of piranha. or the alternative wolf cichlid, 2 enlarged bottom fangs, so much for my friends 15" pacu the wolf left about 25 holes in its side and swam around with skin hangin off one fang for a few days, incriminating evidence. still one fish more vicious black piranha, 125g rbp tank, 8 rbp's 6" each, add one 7" black piranha wake up with 4 floating rbp corpses and 4 critical rbps and one shiny new black piranha. wasent a good day for my friend. yes respect your rbp's they r not as vicious as those pearly whites make them out 2 be.
