i just purchased a silver arowana and i kept reading about how the activated carbon inside of the filter can cause headrot.... i tried to take out the carbon but it just makes the filter useless... so i put it back on.. what the hell do i do?.... i also heard about crickets being fed to it.. but i choose to feed it tuffy's... can someone help me about the filter and what to feed it? Hey Jay, I have been dealing with arowanas for several years now. Your biggest worry should be them jumping out. So make sure that they cannot lift the hood up and jump out. Also feed them Beef Heart. Simply cut it up into chunks and freeze it. Then as you need it just unfreeze and feed. Sorry abouit the filter I have no clue, but I rec. using an Emporer with a bio-wheel. Hope that helps and be careful with the jumping out! IP: Logged |

HEY jAY I AGREE WITH THE BEEFHEART THING, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO THAW IT OUT AT ALL!! THEY LOVE EATING THE STUFF FROZEN SOLID!!! THE AROWANA WILL GROW TO LIKE EATING LIVE FISH, SO WATCH OUT! I THINK THAT ACTIVATED CARBON CAN ONLY AFFECT FISH AFTER MANY YEARS AND INTENSE DOSES, NOT JUST THE CARBON IN YOUR FILTER. I WOULD GO WITH THE CARBON. IP: Logged |

i recently got a silver arowana thats about 2 inches long. it doesn't have the egg sack anymore but i havent noticed any indication that it is eating at all. i've tried feeder guppies, bloodworms (frozen and live, flake, pellet, crickets, and arowana sticks. it now seems to list to one side and lets its tail end droop and then sink backward lower into the water. the temp is in the high 70's and chemistry is all about right. none of the other fish seem to have a prob. but if anyone has ideas i'd be grateful. Hi melrin1181, Try feeding him frozen brine shrimp. You can put a little in a squirt bottle like and empty Amquel or Novaqua bottle and squirt them into the water. This will make the brine shrimp look like they are alive, and he will probably go after them. IP: Logged |
