Hi, I am currently in the process of setting up my 125-150 gallon tank (sorry I'm used to talking in litres). Anyway, I've had water and plants in it now for a little over a month. Snails have appeared (obviously from the plants that were purchased) but not in huge numbers. The current ammonia and nitrite levels are zero. I've been ageing the water without fish. I have used a commercial product, I think it was called Cycle, as recommended by my local fish shop. To build up the ammonia levels to start the cycling I used a piece of raw mince, which I again added to maintain the required bacteria as it's going to be about another month before I am able to start stocking the tank with tropical (community) fish. The plants are doing exceptionally well after some initial teething problems. However, the issue is a white organism has begun to grow on the glass of the tank. The part that sticks to the glass is a rounded four sided shape, the body is cylindrical, a bit sunken-in in the middle and the end has four long hair or tentacle like appendages of it. The total size of these things is about 1-3mm or about 0.04-0.12 of an inch. I don't know if they're plant or animal. They just waive around in the water. I haven't actually seen any move on their own accord but they are growing in number. They seem to grow close to each other but with space around each individual. Does anyone have any idea what they are, how to treat them and how to prevent them coming back? Regards, IP: Logged |

Just a quick PS. to the quesiton above - they aren't hydra. They're shorter and stubbier, don't swim and there's nothing in the tank (small fry or fish food) for them to eat. Thanks, IP: Logged |

Put soem clown loaches or some smaller yo yo botias in your tank, depending on teh size of teh other fish you are gonna put in there. They should eat whatever little creatures are in there, Including your snails. IP: Logged |
