In general you can't tell until they are about 5 to 6 inches. Females are thicker than males. Males are thinner than females. IP: Logged |

Piranhas in general are not sexually dimorphic (no external sex differences). The only way possible to tell in the aquarium is IF they spawn for you. Then you might see some subtle differences under constant observation. Aquaculturist use a magnification for larvae so that the gonads of male piranhas can be seen. But few home hobbyist have that type of equipment. IP: Logged |
