Can anyone tell me if it is possible for a hibernating fish to float to the top of a garden pond? Today, I found my 9 inch goldfish floating at the top of my 6x3 by 4 foot deep pond. The water temp is now 45 degrees, but last week the air and water temps near my Toronto, Canada pond were much lower to the point of ice formation on the pond surface. My remaining smaller fish are sluggish, but still swimming. I removed the big guy and placed him in a bucket of pond water, but I'm afraid he is dearly departed. I haven't been feeding regularly in 1 1/2 month due to decreased water temperatures. In addition, I have reactivated my small fountain this week and I'm currently using a fish-friendly automatic thermostat controlled de-icer that I installed last week and used with great success last winter. Any words of wisdom to prevent my smaller goldfish from going the way of my big guy would be appreciated.
