I live in the upper midwest of USA and have two small garden ponds in which I keep goldfish during the spring summer and fall. The ponds have a southeastern exposure which is unshaded and have direct sun from early morning until 2:00pm. From late spring through early fall, algae growth in the ponds is very intense. In order to enjoy the fish, I need to completely change the water after about two weeks or sometimes less. What can I do to eliminate or slow down this process. Will shading the ponds help? Do the biological filters help? Is there a safe and effective chemical that I can use? Is there anything else I can try?
Please advise me.
Thanks,
Steve

If you get a good answer, please let me know. I live in Michigan and have the very same problem with string algae.

Shading the ponds will help alot.
You will also need to circulate the water in the ponds.
Standing water get algae quicker then moving water.
