We went to the shelter to visit Chewy (he comes home with us on Sat) and I let him and our little Am Esk/pap cross Sashka off leash for a little free time. Sashka has always had a love of rolling in anything REALLY smelly. the riper the better. Well she found something horrible today and by the time I got her to stop Chewy had dropped and rolled in it. Never had I seen 2 dogs so pleased with themselves. LOL any idea what the attraction is?

some times dogs just smell something they really like and roll in it...usually it is something really smelly. My dog rolled on poop once (yuck!) and i know this dog who always rolls on ciggertte butts. Sometimes at the dog park there will be a certain scent and all the dogs will roll in it.
I think they want to cover themselves in the scent...maybe something to do to mask their scent in the wild....but probley something just smells really good to them and they roll in it.

Oh gosh- i have a funny story about rolling in stuff- My parents dog, Pacer was sitting by the dinner table, so my dad gave him a tiny piece of the liver they were eating...Well, Pacer must have thought it smelled so great that he wanted to cover himself in the scent, because he dropped in on the floor and attempted to "roll" in it!! They said it was the funniest thing to watch- a 90 pound dog attempting to roll around in a piece of liver 1 inch in diameter- dogs are so silly about that stuff!!!

The first time I gave Nala chicken livers she wanted to roll in it. I discouraged her and now she eats it, although she prefers it slightly frozen.

Doggies just have a different idea of what smells good than we do. They think the stinky stuff makes nice perfume, and they think our perfume is hideous!

The absolute worse one was the day we took Sashka down to the dike and she found a rotting salmon. Rolled in it, tried to eat it. Yuck. It was a really hot day, I had to put her back in the HOT car and drive for almost an hour to get home. Even her groomer wouldn't take her until I cleaned her up. LOL now I will have 2 beast to bring home smelly Got to love those dogs

Last year at the park I was laughing watching Natalie rolling on the ground, moaning and looking so pleased....as I approached her I smelled something so horrific I almost passed out. I could'nt figure out exactly what it was that she rolled in but it smelled like a rotting animal carcass and I had to give her several bathes to get most of the smell off but even then I could still smell it on her faintly. It was so gross...I'm much more careful now to try and avoid this in the future.

Molly, has the tendancy to roll on dead animals....especially the skunks...
Oh and its horrible. We bathed her like 10 times with tomato juice and everything else imagineable! So a month later, she went to the groomer to get shaved for the summer, and the lady said she stunk soooo bad they had to open all the windows. I guess the smell stuck under all that fur!!

Ugh! Yesterday Ranger and I were sitting in the yard, and he was rolling in something, but normally I can't even see anything where he is rolling, so I don't think anything of it. While he was rolling he somehow rolled in a way that it unclipped his leash. When I finally realized he had come unclipped, I went over there to clip it back on. WHile clipping it, he stood up, and I saw what he had been rolling in. A dead snake about a foot long! Thankfully it lookd like a little garter (sp?) snake, so he couldn't have rolled in anything too bad!

Nala once rolled in something foul when my husband had her at the park. He came home and went stomping through the house, so I asked him what was wrong. He grumbled about Nala needing a bath, so I told him to go rest and I took her to a do-it-yourself bath place. It takes about 20 minutes (at least) to drive there and she was FOUL! She was covered in brown....goop. And she was terrified of the bath tub and the water. It would have been torture trying to do this at home.

The guy at the shop helped me, but we were all soaking wet by the end. But she smelled better!

It took days for the smell to leave the car, though.
