Hello everyone,

I am looking for some advice on house training a golden retriever puppy? I havent gotten her yet but will on Friday and need some help!

The 'problem' is that I have a miny mutt pup who unfortunately, at 11weeks old is still using the paper.

Will the new puppy get into this same habit? should i not let her go into the room where the papers are at?

I want her to use the bathroom outside right from the start, how should i go about this? also, will Nana also take this example and start using the bathroom outside too? I have tried to untrain her from the paper because we are getting a new puppy but I havent been able to. She can be outside for hours and will not use the bathroom, but once she goes inside she runs for the newspaper.

Ok, so I really need 2 types of advice: how to train the golden pup to use the bathroom outside, and how to get Nana off the newspaper and outside. Please help! Thank u!

For the paper training. When you see him fixing to "go" on the paper. Take him outside and put the paper down. he'll go, and slowly you can wean him away from it.

Remember your pets should go out at least every 15 min as a puppy and gradually they can be let out at longer intervals.

Yes, bring the papers outside for your existing pup and see if that helps.

I would definitely keep the new pup in a room without the papers. I have a feeling she would learn from the other pup to use the papers and you will be stuck with TWO of them going on papers. I would bring the older pup outside every time you bring the new one out - can't hurt and perhaps she will learn from the new one.

Thank u! I will definately try this, starting from now. Nana just used the bathroom and wont use it for a while since she has learned to hold it more now. I will definately try putting the newspaper outside when she wants to use it, ill update on how that goes. Thanks!

Hopefully the golden wont be too hard to house train, every breeder ive spoken to say that they are really easy to house train.

I want to use a crate for her but I was wondering since she is going to grow alot for her first crate could i use a puppy pen type of thing? It would be a reasonable sized wire made pen, with the top open (i could cover the top) and a towel on the floor. would this be all right?

As long as the pen is stable, I would think that would work.

You can also buy a wire crate (large enough for her adult size) with a divider, so you can make the crate small to begin with and gradually make it bigger as she grows. Or you can buy a wire or plastic crate and stuff a cardboard box (or something) in the back of it to make it smaller.

Thanks for the crate advice Jamiya!

Good news, I took Nana out side, put the paper outside and she used the bathroom! Well not on the newspaper but on the grass, but its stil outside so im celebrating! ;-)
I praised her alot and she seemed really happy. She did the same thing she does when she uses the paper. She'll sniff it, run back to me wagging her tail. When I praise her she'll run back, sniff it and wag her tail again, her way of saying 'mom i did something right so praise me'.

Thanks! I hope I can work on this, when I took her outside I wasnt expecting her too go, or I expected a 20minute wait but I guess since she was tied up she had been holding it.

I will take her out later on and in the morning. Thnak u everyone

Hi,
Using a crate is GREAT advice.

You also might want to hang a set of beels on your door knob. Everytime you go out ring the bells first. this way the pup will soon connect the bells to going potty. THEN they will start going over to ring the bells to be let out. I warn you though.... sometimes they do this just to go out and play and fool you . LOLOLOLOLOL

The best type of bells to get are those big Christmas bells on a string that will hang from the knob to the floor where puppy can reach. I usually just get mine from the dollar store

sandangel: Wow, that is a great idea! I never would have thought about it. I will definately go out today and see if I can find some bells. I have to go buy the pen/crate today since she is coming home toda! I am so excited, she is my first golden
