Hi, ok, this is something I've been wondering and asking around to find out since that article was linked last week about how we try to feed our dogs needs.

In it it said how until a few years ago a family pet was just that, regardless of breed, but now days we treat them as they were originally meant to be on earth for.

It got me to thinking about how much time I spend with Floob and how much of my time he actually *needs'.

Sooo... I was wondering how many hours a day do you spend with your dog/pup? I mean actual time, playing games, walking them, on the floor with them, in the garden with just them, not doing chours or anything else, soley with them?

Maybe if you say your dogs age it might end up showing how much it changes as they grow out of puppyhood.

Answers on a postcard...

Sadie turned 10 last Wednesday and she doesn't enjoy the long walks she used to....put her leash on her and walk her to the end of the road and she's happy (she lets us know when she's had enough by turning her head and constantly looking over her shoulder - she's tired and wants to go home).

So fulfilling her needs these days are not much...food prep., when she wants some attention she comes to us seeking pets, she moans/groans when she hasn't gone for a walk in a few days and we'll take her out for awhile, she doesn't run/play much anymore and when she does she's lame for days so that is also limited now...but if we ask her to go for a ride she's up for that!!

So at her age of 10 her "needy" times are very few - she just likes to know every now and then that we still care and we show her whenever she wants.

Ranger is CONSTANTLY with me! Brittanys are people dogs, so he wants to be where the people are, in other words with me. If i have to go out in the yard for any reason, front or back, he goes with me. I would LOVE to take him more places with me in the car, and so would he (he jumps in anytime I open the door!) but I can't just leave him in the car. I would say I spend most of my time with my dog. Of course, he is only 9.5 months old, so that may change as he gets older, but I enjoy it, so I hope not!

I don't know how to add it up,honestly Witt is with me nearly 24/7. He goes to work with me almost everyday, if I run to the store he goes with me..etc. He sleeps on me, when I watch TV he is in my lap, when I am on the computer he is on my feet, when I cook dinner he is at my side. We go to the park several times a week for about an hour each, he goes to the barn with me most nights, thats usually about an hour, he goes to flyball practice once a week thats an hour there and 45 minutes in the truck each way. He is with me constantly and I talk to him much as I would a human being with me while I did things. I may be in the kitchen cooking dinner and stop to ask for a few tricks, or sit on the floor and give him a 10 minute massage before going back to cooking. I do this all day everyday, it's bits of absolute attention occasionally throughout the day but he is literally with me and being paid attention to all day everyday.
When I am at home it is much the same for Dooley, and he does go to work with me on occasion and the barn and park, flyball etc...but not to the extent as Witt. Dooley is in Shawns face from the moment he walks in the door at night and Shawn pays attenton to him the way I do Witt when he is home. Darby comes to us when he wants affection and lovings, but he doesn't hang with us the way the big boys do.
I would say that Shawn and I are the exceptions for the most part in dog owners, we spend an enormous amount of time doing things with our dogs and make them a part of everyday life in ways most people do not. I also think that not all dogs would like or could handle this. I think certain breeds lend themselves to this lifestyle more than others. Darby is a Poodle and I know he doesn't enjoy going to work with me all the time, once in a while suits him. He likes to stay close to home. He likes to nap by himself and have quiet time in his kennel (door open his own choice). Witt thinks it's horrendous if I take a shower, he refuses to come into the bathroom, but feels he must keep watch over me at the door and vocalize his protests. Each dog has it's own needs and wishes and they certainly can adjust to different lifestyles.
