I told you I would keep you posted and here it is. I have taken the advice given and my now 5 month old puppy is still no closer to being potty trained than she was 2 weeks ago. I feed her 2-3 times daily, and take her out at 6:30am, 7:30am, Noon, 5pm, and then frequently in the evenings except on Mondays and Thursdays when I have school then she goes out at 5pm, 5:30pm, and at 10pm when I get home. When we are outside we stay in one place and I constantly tell her go potty. She barely ever goes. I will take her out over and over again and she will still somehow manage to go in the house. I live in an aprtment and my upsatirs neighboor has just recently notified animal control for neglect on my behalf because my puppy cries constantly when I am not home and she is in her cage. I am wondering if she is right "Do I neglect my puppy", and if so should I continue to try or should I give her up? Myself and Sadie (puppy) continue in our obiendence training weekly and she is doing very well, except potty training. She still goes in her crate and lies in it. I have called the local adoption agencies and none have room except for the ones that euthanize and I will NOT take her there. Even if an animal shelter would take her I find myslef not wanting to give her up. Any advice at this point would be welcome.

That's horrible. Damn crotchety neighbors. My friend had the same problem with her pup in their condo. It sounds like your pup may have seperation anxiety. You may want to lookup different ways to help it. I know Harley had SA when we first got her and it took a good 3-4 months before she was okay to be left alone and didn't cry. A tired dog is a happy dog. One of the best methods that helped me was excercise. I get up even earlier now (yuck, I amnot a morning person) and I run and excercise Harley for 45-55 minutes before I leave the house. You cna also leave her a yummy treat when you leave to distract her when you walk out the door. You should also try to talk to your neighbours. Let them know you are working on the crying and she is not crying because she is neglected. Also, talk to your trainer. they may be able to help you with the potty training. do you have a balcony? You could try putting paper down or a box (you can get dog litter boxes) and just start all over again. Your pup may be feelign your stress when you take him out to pee and so he gets stressed and can't go. If you have him on a leash when you take him out, keep the leash as loose as possible. This will help him to relax. Maybe make pee time part of a walk or something fun. I'm sure he loves to be outside and may be prolonging peeing because he doesn't want to go back inside right when he's done. Harley doesn't like to just go out to pee so when she goes I throw her ball or run around with her. I don't think you should give up. It just takes time and patience. Some new dogs aren't feeling comfortable and secure in there new home until a couple of months after. Just be patient and loving.
Sorry, no expert advice, just tips that helped me.
Good Luck

Have you considered a doggy daycare to leave your pup for maybe the days you go to class at night, so that she wouldn't be alone all day? Even though you come home to let her out, being alone from morning till night is a long time for a pup- they need interaction people and/or other dogs. I know that with our dog, she is almost a year old and we always try to avoid leaving her alone during the week for more than an hour after work because we know she is alone all day while we are at work...do you have a friend maybe that could come over and play with her? IF we have to be gone for a long time at night, we sometimes have my brother come over and play with Cameron- it helps her out a lot I think. Sorry this has nothing to do with housebreaking- I just picked up on the part about her being alone all day for two days a week so I thought I'd respond.

P.S. I can sympathize with you--I know it's hard to have a puppy and have to work and have classes-- I did the same thing, luckily I had my husband around to watch her when I was gone!
