I'm taking Jasper up to see Miah during the Easter Period. Last time I took her up she sat up front with me, but now the law here says that all dogs have to secured with a Seatbelt if they ride in cars. Do they have special seatbelts for animals, or do they expect me to use the seatbelts in the car???

They have all sorts of seatbelts just for dogs that could also be used as a harness. Some come with padding (the kind I have) that looks like a harness and you slip the seatbelt through a lop in the back. They have some that actually attach to the seatbelt and then you attach your dog to it. And they have harness kinds without padding with a handy strap at the back. I have seen them at Petco, Petsmart, and most pet stores...the dog can use it and still sit up front with you as long as she will sit relativly still. If she moves arounds a lot and turns around she might get twisted up...my dog took about 2 times in the car with it to get use to it. They are very handy! I got pulled over once for my license plate and the officer commented on the seatbelt for the dog...I was happy it was on at the time!

She loves sitting up front with me, and it takes her a couple of turns before she gets comfortable. I'll just have to remember that it is on her before i take her out for a wee break.

Haha Jody! I am getting Ranger a seatbelt when he is older and stops growing . He doesn't go that many places with me now, waiting till he is a little more obedient, although I don't think he has that far to go. He just needs to get better with heel, come, and not jumping, all three of which he is improving in all the time!

We use a padded harness with Nala. This is one of the few things that worked flawlessly with her. The very first time I tried it, I put it on her, opened the front door of the car, and she jumped in and sat right down facing forward. I buckled her in and there she sat!

She can even manage to curl up on the seat, although on long trips I stuff things on the floor to the height of the seat and cover everything with a blanket to make a larger space for her to lie down.

Nala is not a circler though - she pretty much just lies down - so we never had a problem with getting tangly.

It took longer to teach her to "wait" when I unbuckle her so she doesn't tromp over me on the way out of the car.

Oh, and I can even open the driver side door and she goes right through and sits in her spot on the passenger side. It's so awesome. People see how good she is getting in the car and they think I am an expert trainer or something, LOL!

Since we have had Jasper she has always rode in the back on the Rodeo and been secured on there, so taking her in a car and her being belted in, I'm not sure how she'll go. I can just see her now looking at me with those big brown eyes and saying 'mummy, this thing feels uncomfortable, take it off'.

I will try and stuff the front floor for her so it's the same height as the seat to make her more comfortable.

Jasper also fly's through the drivers side door when i open it aswell and always ends up on the passanger seat or the back seat.

She has came along way since she was little, she would never come near the car at all, wouldn't even look at it I dont think. Then Dru and I made her come for a drive with us and she used to vomit everywhere. But now she doesn't even care and loves going on trips now.

Our little girl has been on belt for over two years and my big guys have safety strap for in back of our truck.
But even with the safety strap I still have people telling me it's unsafe and I should crate them.
We got our stuff at. www.canineauto.com

Hi there.... I strap both my dogs in my car with the harness type contraptions. I don't like cars myself because I have lost a family member to an accident, so I am always a bit paranoid on the roads.
I have a 3 month old pup and bought her a cheap harness, I know I'll have to get her a bigger one when she grows, but it was only cheap and I think it's better to get them used to it while they are young. She has worked out she can't twist around and stuff so she usually just goes to sleep. Bender on the otther hand hates the car and gets nervous, he used to vomit and drool like a tap, but he is getting better. Stuffing the floor with stuff to make it the same height of the seat is a fantastic idea, I'm going to try it, beacause Bender stands up in the back all shaky and when I stop he sometimes falls forwad off the seat. He is HOPELESS in the car!!! I can't believe how much roughing up he loves at home but then can't handle the car. I try to drive as gently as possible, but he still falls around. Even with the harness on, and then he gets all twisted up and stressed out!!

I'll be going to the local pet shop today to see what I can find as far as a harness goes. I hope she goes ok, she sometimes falls around the car aswell when in the back seat she'll end up between the front seat and back seat on the floor if i go around a corner.

The trip will take 9 hours, thats by myself, so goodness knows how long it will this time, I think i did it in around 10-11 hours last time, I can't really remember.

I'll post a pic with her in the front seat and the harness on, if i remember.

Knobbles - I'm very sorry to hear about your family member that passed away.

Jody
