My puppy Nana got hit by a car last night, she got loose and was running across the street when our neighborhs van hit her. She wasnt hurt too bad, he got her back legs she was just scared so we went down to his house and he didnt even know he had hit her. Luckily he took responsibility and said he would pay her vet bills, so we started the 20minute drive to one of the only clinics open.

Well after being there for hours and listening to her yelp and finally fall asleep the doctor told us she was just banged up, no broken bones, nothing! I was so happy. What saved her is that she bolted at a full run across the street, and the car wasnt going super fast.

Nana definately needs a puppy class or two, I just never wanted to take her cuz she is terrified of other dogs.

Oh my gosh!!! thank goodness she is going to be o.k.!!! You poor thing, that is so scary! And my hat is off! to that man for taking full responsibility. Yep! puppy classes would probably be a good idea. Give her a pat from me....and lots of rest today...

Good luck! Susan

yep, definately scary. Shes so sore right now, but loving the attention. Shes getting lots of treats and rest. She hardly want to walk, but she is eating fine.

Shes a funny dog, everytime you tell her "Poor Baby" she will start whyning and whimpering so those two words are off limits today.

I thought she wouldnt want to go potty cuz her legs are so sore but she woke up today and i sat her on the newspaper and after a bit of whimering she squatted and used the paper.

Thanks for your concern!

Wow! I know how scary that must be! I have seen Ranger almost get hit twice, only he is getting better about not going in the street, thank God! I am just so worried that one day he will get out there when I am not there to tell him 'NO!' to keep him from going in the street.

Lanena,

Obedience classes are a must. Don't let the fact that your pupp is scared of other dogs stop you. Classes will help her get over her fear of other dogs. Classes are really better places to meet other dogs because it is a controlled environment where everyone is there because they want to take better care of their dogs. Also the classes will teach your dog to pay attention to you no matter what else is going on.

After that scare I am definately starting obedience with her. Next Sunday there is an obedience trial where a very popular training 'academy' is going to be competing. I spoke to her last week about puppy classes for Laika, my soon to be new pup, but I will definately speak to her about Nana as well.

I have no idea how the whole socialization thing will start with her she is terrified of other dogs. She just had a bad start. Mom was a first time mom of 8, 5 died and the other 3 she stopped feeding at 3 weeks. 2 of the pups left home at that time and she was fed until weaned then placed with mom outside. Everytime anyone would look at her shed go running into the dog house. When I took her home I took her to visit mom a week later and she didnt remember her and was terrified of her.

I am really sorry to hear about your pup and glad she will be OK. I hate that heart lurching feeling when your dog gets away from you.

BUT...I have to disagree in your statement about the neighbor taking responsibility...I feel like you are responsible for your dog, if she got away from you and ran into the road the bills should be yours. Case in point...a friend of mines horse got out of it's pasture, was hit by a truck and killed. She was taken to court and ordered to pay for the damages to the mans truck and recieved no damages for her horse. Bottom line..horses and dogs are not supposed to be in the road where cars drive, the negligence is placed on the pet owner. Please don't take this wrong...my dog has gotten away from me more than once, and I have had the blood chilling scare of him almost getting hit, accidents happen, but the responsibility was mine.

I know, the fault was mine because she got loose and ran into the road. I went to his house last night to see if he knew he hit the dog, because i thought he knew he hit her and just kept going.

He felt so bad he didnt even realize he hit her, and he offered to pay the vet bills. My step father told him that it could have happened to anyone but he saw me so shaky and upset he insisted on taking her over to the vets, and said hed pay the bill.

I couldnt say no because we didnt have any money to pay for her bills and she was crying alot, i thought she might have fractured something or had internal bleeding.

But luckily she was fine. Shes still whimpering when she gets picked up, shes been sleeping on a pillow all day. I take her every few hours to the paper but its painful for her to squat so shes been holding it I guess.

I agree with obedience school- having a scared puppy is exactly the reason to socialise it. Otherwise you will have problems when they grow up- just take it slow.
I feel for you it must be awful-- my pup was running towards the road the other day and I nearly had heart failure!! Hope she gets better soon.
