I am trying to teach Nala a "touch" command. The way I read to do it says to hold out your hand and when she touches it with her nose, click and treat.

The problem is, she notices my hand immediately, but rather than touching it with her nose, she opens her mouth and tries to nip at it!

I certainly don't want to reward her for nipping my hand. Any suggestions? Just hold out for the nose touch? Do I repeat the command if it has been a while and she is losing focus? Or do I not put a command to it at first at all, and just click and treat when she touches my hand and THEN add the command later?

Hmmm, Dooley learned "touch" in agility class and he uses his nose. Witt learned it when I was trying to get him to touch the flyball box and he uses his feet. No matter what I ask Witt to touch he uses his foot. Also if I hold out my hand...he high fives me automatically...a trick he gets a little too excited about and anticipates. The kids friends think this is cool, so they overuse it. He just assumes now that a hand open and raised means high five and TREAT. We have been ignoring that trick for the most part and changing it up so he can't make presumtions. What is your purpose for teaching her touch? Maybe that will help in figuring out how to avoid the nipping.

Sorta have my hands full at the moment!

I haven't tried the touch command in a while. Yesterday I ran her though sit, stay, come, down, shake, leave it and she was responding very quickly and reliably! I need to get her stays more reliable with distractions, for agility.

Speaking of which, we are leaving in 10 minutes for our class.
