Ok, Ranger is doing A LOT better about going in the street and running out whenever the electric gate is opened, but he is not there yet. Does anyone have any ideas on how to train him to not go into the street or run out of the electric gate when he can't see me? When he can see me, he won't got, he knows he will get in trouble. But, if I try to back out of the electric gate in the car, he runs out, so I have to either pull the car around front while he is inside, leave him in his kennel the whole time I am gone, pull the car out of the garage, stick him in teh garage, pull the car out and close the gate, then open teh garage and call him out and then close it again (very complicated, I know!). He likes water, so I can't just hide somewhere and squirt him, and he likes loud noises, he thinks they mean it is time to play, he used to be afraid of a cofee can full of pennies, then it became his favorite toy. What should I do? I have even gone so far as to spank him so he at least won't do it when he can see me, and that worked, but what to do when he can't see me? He has only been spanked twice, for those of you who can't stand it, once for going in the street, and the other for the alley. He now will not go in either if I speak to him in my 'warning tone'.

Hi! I take it, this is a gate that can't stay closed? I'm sorry I don't have any idea's for you except maybe more training.

Perhaps someone else may have an answer...

Well, it is one of those electric gates. It closes, but I like it open to play basketball on the driveway, or just to play fetch with Ranger if there are too many cats in the front yard (Ranger refuses to play fetch or walk, even though he won't chase them if I tell him not to, he just has to watch them!). It has a little button you push (like a garage) and it opens, so that you can back out of the driveway, then you close it and the backyard is once again completely fenced.

Oh and about spanking! I over reacted the other day and did the same thing. Freebie was out front with my Husband and a cat crossed the street, Well Freebie took off after him right in front of a car! Thank Goodness he wasn't hit!!!! it scared the heck out of me, and I spanked him. I felt bad afterwards but that's what happens when you get scared....just like a child! It was our fault for even allowing him in the front without a leash to begin with. And I'm the one that complains about wandering dogs, How dare me!!!

Hope you get it figured out!

Yes, Ranger has almost gotten hit twice. Once he ran RIGHT behind the car, the other time, the other car (actually, there were three!) was at a stop sign (a 4way stop). THe first he was chasing a cat, the second he was running back home. I have found that is the best way to get him home if I can't get hte dog whistle. Chase him until we get home, since he thinks it is a game! I am sure I look like a dork, though, running around with all of his favorite toys in an attempt to bribe him...Hardly ever works, unless you throw it. With my old dog, though, if I brought the leash out and told her she was going on a walk she would run up to me until I got it on, then we would proceed around the culd-a-sac. It finally clicked with her that she was already on a 'walk', so then I taught her to walk next to me without a leash, so I would run up to her and we would do that around the culd-a-sac since that was the only path we could take that it would work!
