For some reason, every month, my austrailian shephard decides to try to eat my "sanitary items" from the trash (flushing is not an option where I live). I try to keep the door closed during that time but someone always manages to leave the door open. I am wondering why he does this and should I be concerned that something is wrong with him?

I know how gross it is. My female does it to me too. One thing you can do is get a garbage witha lid, or put the trash up high where he can't get it. (Maybe even put it in the shower and close the curtain?) I can just close the bathroom door from my dog, but yes, it is VERY nasty. I know with my dog, she doesn't eat the "goods" just rips it apart and licks it, oh gosh what a gross conversation. The worst part is that my female is in heat right now, and we keep undies and a pad on her and we have to keep a close eye on her because she will slip away and tear hers out and chew it aswell. I have found no "cure" for this except, made the disposables out of reach.
Good Luck to a gross situation.

Bully said it all! keep them out of reach, they can hurt your dog if he eats enough of them. It's very normal behavior, but not good on the digestive track.

Good luck! Susan

Panties. My dogs eat panties. If I forget to close my hamper or accidentally leave a pair out. I've learned my lesson and no longer shop at victorias secret because my dogs will always get ahold of them before they wear out on their own =P

lol Sebastain also chews up my panties i bought a new hamper with a lid so he can't but the little brat puts his paw threw the desgin and pulls them out. He also always steals my daugthers bras and runs threw the house with them she gets so embarassed i think she is going to strangle him one day lol

and as far as the santiary stuff we put the garbage can on the back of the toliet other wise he would get everything out of there and tear it up all over the house he also loves the empty toliet paper roll's (he really likes them full) i came home one day and had a whole roll of toliet paper ALL over the house

Serene went through this too!!! Once, my husband tried to get one away from her and she growled at him with full hackles!! Garbage can with snapping lid!! Now she just stares at it wistfully.

My dog, also, used to go through the wastebasket for the 'sanitary' items. He wouldn't eat them exactly, but he'd remove them from the tissue I had wrapped around them- and leave them places. Imagine walking into your house with a new date and finding them in the middle of the living room floor.

Darby is the only one of my dogs who will do this, but he hasn't in many years. I put the trash can up and always close the door when I am leaving. Dooley will do the underwear thing...but he only does it to Shawns. Shawn has learned to keep his clothes picked up and we close the door to our bedroom when we leave. He would kill me if he knew I was going to tell this...but I 'm going to for the laugh...

When Dooley was a puppy, before Shawn learned to keep his stuff picked up, Shawn had made Dooley sleep on the floor one night. Dooley would get up on the bed and Shawn would make him get down. When Shawn woke up and tried to get dressed for work he had quite the surprise. Every pair of underwear he had had been chewed along with a couple t-shirts. the dirty ones that were on the floor all had holes in the butt or crotch..the clean ones that I had so neatly folded and stacked and that he had so carelessly left sitting on the lowest open drawer of his dresser because he was too lazy to put them away...were all shredded. All he had left was a GOLD LAMME snake skin thong that was given to him as a joke prize at a gay bowling league party we had gone to the year before. He wore it. The job site he was on had a disgusting porta potty that was located quite a ways away from where the guys were actually working, he and the rest of the guys on the job had not been using the porta potty and had been just whipping it out closer to the job shack for the duration of the job...Shawn wasn't about to whip anything out that was encased in gold lamme on a job site...so he spent the day using the gross porta potty and the guys noticed and gave him hell all day wanting to know why. He finally told them and for weeks after they referred to him as "Thelma".
Trust me...he keeps his underwear picked up and Dooley sleeps on the bed every night.

Gotta luv those doggies.

Is't annoying and nasty!
I think the worst part of it all, is that my husband freaks out like a little girl and runs away. lol.

Hahahaha, Maisey!! It's amazing what it takes to train a man to put things away. I am thankful to Nala for having ONE clean room in the house now.

I think it was actually my cats that used to do the sanitary items thing. I had forgotten about it, but it is ringing a very fuzzy bell now. I seem to recall getting a garbage can for the bathroom with a twist top lid so even if they knocked it over, nothing would fall out.

Aren't animals fun?!
