I posted this message on the pit bull forum as that is where I spend most of my time these days. But, after readng the link Jamiya put in another post, I am going to post this here and hope to hell I get a ton of responses. I have only gotten one (wishing me luck) in the other forum. So please everyone, let the info flow in.

Hello,
So I went to visit my father yesterday and his wife. (God she is dumb) Anyway, they have a chiuaua (sp?) and they always talk "dog" with me when I am there, even though they know nothing about dogs. So they proceed to tell me that in a couple of years they would like to start breeding dogs (retirement years) for a "hobby". They said they are going to get pure bred dogs (can't remember which dog, smaller dog though) and all the dogs will have papers ect.
So fine I said, lets see how much you really know about breeding. Well, I say you will have to wait a couple of years for the bitches to mature before you can breed them.
My father then proceeds to say "Can't you just breed on their first heat!!!!
OMG I almost hit the man, my dogs first heat was at 9 months (well that's when we got her and she went into heat right after). HELLO people! I was soo mad. Then he tells me well if I sell the dogs for like $1200 each, how can I not make a profit off of it, even after all the vet bills ect.
Anyways, just wanted to give you some background, now my real question:
Where can I get real breeding info, I know somene on here breeds Shepherds - Charmedagain I think. Please help me! I know they said they were gonna wait a couple of years, but you don't understand the trailer trash wife he is with, she won't end up reserching it. LIke for ex: how many times should you breed your bitch? Only once per year? They want to have 2 bitches and one male and just have breeding machines!!! These are the people I hate, and I find them in my own family, I can't believe it. All they had to say to me after I told them some of the responsibilities of breeding (having to take puppies back if the homes dont work) is that its not like we're breeding Pit Bulls like you have,(just own, I don't breed) these are dogs people are going to want forever! What morons, I would rather have a large dog (any breed) than a dog that is prone to mouthiness and nipping. (Just my opinion) ARGH! I was so dumbfounded, I just left. Anyways, please post lots of info, or if you have files you want to send me, please send them to: leslie146@hotmail.com. Thanks guys!
I appreciate anything you can give me.
Leslie

Lets not blame the dogs for a trait bred into them by the evilness of man. Lets understand them instead, so we can provide responsible ownership and give them a chance to show the world why they are so deserving of our love.

All I can say is thank DoG Bully that you are there to educate them! Keep up the good work. First thing to do is sit down with them and get them to visit (try a google search) the websites of the the National and Local Chi Clubs and convince them to become members. The sites should provide some educational info plus list the Clubs Code of Ethics (for Chi breeders & owners to follow). If there are any reputable Chi breeders in your parents area, willing to help or mentor them this is a great learning tool. Then they need Chi books and canine structure & genetics books (perhaps a Christmas present from you this year!!). Oh, and breeding books. Like Honey stated try searching here as well, some threads have a wealth of info just waiting to be read

I know its hard, but try to keep calm and neutral that way they will feel you are on their side and hopefully remain open to learning! Education is the key!!! Best of luck!!!

Wow! I can't believe you talk about your Father in that way! But with that said! You are right! it doesn't sound like they know what they are doing at all. I'm sure that you will get some good advise from Mike and others here as well. Perhaps buying them a book or even a video on breeding would be a good idea, that way they can see for themselves that there's allot more to it than putting two dogs together.

I hope you get the answers you're searching for.

Perhaps this site that Jamiya found may help you. http://www.sonic.net/~cdlcruz/GPCC/library/coleart.htm

Education is the key

Again Good luck, I hope you are able to reason with them.

Sounds to me like you have a relationship with your father, as I do mine...sucks, really sucks, but in reality there are idiots out there whether they are family or not.

Sounds to me like they would rather run a puppy mill, than to better the breed. I suggest tuning them in to the horrors of puppymills, show them the outcomes of idiots liek them coming up with stupid ideas, and taking them to a rescue or shelter and show them just how they will be adding to the problem.

DOn't end a relationship with your father, even if its rocky now, but you really need to focus in on what they may be doing to the breeds and overall outcome of their lives.

Good luck girl.

HI Bullylove1, Hope the email helped its just a snip of some of the things that they really need to think about before they get into breeding.
I dont think that they will like the idea that not all females are fertile same as not all males are.
They will also not like the cost of tests that need to be done before mating.

Well hope it helps in some way.

Hi! I would like to apologize for my comment on how you spoke to your Father. It's none of my business! Families are not all the same. I was a little shocked, but I'm not in your shoe's either. Again, I'm sorry!

Sincerely, Susan

its okay susan,
no offence taken! I just think of it this way, you get the hand you're drawn in life. Just like you can't choose your parents. I just want to educate them now to see how desicions they make in the future may have a negative impact down the road.
Thanks for your support everyone!
Mike I am going to check my email right now. You rock!
