An excellent article about one woman's experience with breeding - and this one had six healthy puppies! http://www.sonic.net/~cdlcruz/GPCC/library/coleart.htm

WOW, Jimiya, that is good, I read a lot here of what people saying it is not a money maker by any means, but reading it first hand really sinks in. We should all print this and hand it out to anyone thinking of breeding their dog and thinking they are going make a fortune. honeybear IP: Logged |

Great link Jamiya, thanks. The first part of this woman's story is not unlike one of my own. We traveled to Oregon where the stud was showing. Darn I wished I'd kept a *detailed* expense report. If I have time I'll look through my files (i know I have receipts somewhere) and tell the story! All costs tallied up around $4000 (not including the stud fee) and no puppies! Was I mad or upset? No, as a breeder I know sometimes these things happen. IP: Logged |

Wow, she dished out some serious cash there. I don't see why she would have bred unless she knew the pups had homes before they were born. I had no problems with my puppies, they were all sold, and had wonderful homes before they were a week old! And yes, she was right its expensive, but I wouldn't change a thing. IP: Logged |

But she DID have homes lined up - and every single one of them fell through. She probably should have followed up with them more closely, but you'd be amazed how flaky even your friends can be.

True, someone once told me never do business with family. I find that hard to beleive, but from all the stories I've heard, Someone letting their family member borrow a car, them suposed tomake payments, that falls through, or family expectign things for FREE and downing you when you don't...stuff like that. As far as puppies go, I require a deposite of $50 non refundable, before they can pick the puppy out or reserve one. That kinda sifts out the loosers and flakes from the serious inquaries. What rubbed me the wrong way was how the first paragraph began with someone thinking about a fortune someone else made breeding...and then her subsequent decision to breed her own dog. IP: Logged |
