I posted on the cat site about this, but need an answer right away. Long story short! Sister's cat has aids and an upper respitory infection, vet suggests putting him down.

The cat belongs to my neice, she is 18 so she's not a little girl. But this cat is her life! so to speak...

How would you approach her with putting him down?

Thank you in advance! I'm sorry it's not dog related...

Susan

I'm so sorry, Susan. I guess all that can be done is talking to her about pain and suffering, quality of life, etc. Point out all the good years. Memories will live on forever. Perhaps devote some time to creating a memorial with pictures, stories, things like that - that is therapeutic for some people. Let her choose what to do with the remains - cremation, burial, etc. Make sure she gets to say goodbye. Give her the choice of seeing the body afterwards, or not seeing the body - of being present or not being present. It would be very hard, but I am one of the ones who would hold the cat until it was over, no matter the cost to myself. Others would rather not and that's fine, too.

Different people grieve in different ways. Even a grief counselor might not be a bad idea if she is taking it really hard - someone understanding about pet loss. I'm sure there are also good books that can help her.

Another cat or kitten sometimes helps (if that is a possibility) but sometimes not - or at least not right away.

I'm so sorry about the kitty!

Susan, how is your niece doing?

If you are into flower remedies, star-of-Bethlehem is supposed to help with grief. I haven't tried flower rememdies (yet) but some people swear by them.

Hi! they have decided to give it a few days because he is starting to drink water again on his own. I hope he pulls through! Thanks again! I don't want to say much more because it's not dog related but it is posted on the cat site.

Jamiya, you were wonderful!

Thanks to you too! Nik
