Hi, I just got a 9 week old Maltipoo puppy. This is my very first puppy so I am completely lost on...food, bathing, or even potty training. It seems as though everyone here is extremely helpful and knowledgable...so can someone give me tips on what to do first??

My first questions are:

How do I start to potty train this puppy??
Is it ok to let him sleep on the bed??
Can I bathe it as frequent as he may smell??

I'm new at this...any wise words will help!! Especially the potty training. It already went poop on the white carpet!! Thanks!! =)

what most people do with potty training is to put the dog outside every 30 mins and if it goes gives LOTS of praise. if it does it inside the house dont yell at the dog etc, just look disappointed and clean it up. dont rub its nose in its mess or anything, its really pointless and disgusting to do that. for the first few months youll most likely always have accidents. as long as you catch the mess in time youll be able to clean it up without it staining. if you want to let him sleep on the bed thats ok, but remember, if you ever want him not to it will be hard to break the habit! some people say dogs get dominant when they sleep on beds but its not always the case and i havent come across a dog who sleeps on the bed and is boss of the house. with the bathing you can do it once a week if you like. thats enough to keep the doggy smell away. dont do it anymore than once a week though, otherwise it will be too harsh on his skin. use puppy shampoo. hope the white carpet survives!! =]

Good luck with your new puppy! I have a new puppy, too. I am learning a lot by reading this forum. I do have some suggestions for house training. I have had my puppy for four weeks and he has only had a poo poo accident twice. His pee pee accidents have been more frequent but are still quite rare. I am a stay-at-home mom, so this was easy for me, but this is what I do and it has been very successful:

I take the puppy out right after he has woken from a nap (I don't let his feet hit the floor, I literally pick him up and we walk out the door).

I take him out immediately after he has had water or food. I take him out again about 15 or twenty minutes later.

I take him out whenever I see him sniffing the carpet.

Once we get out -- I take him to the same spot each day (you will have to pick up the poo or at the very least bury it or it will quickly become a nasty area).

Also, watch his body language -- when we go out and his tail goes up in the air I know that means he needs to poo. I wait for him to find the "right" spot. Stay out with him for a little while -- give him time to relax and do his business.

I NEVER scold him for pooing or peeing on the carpet (remember - it is YOUR fault when he uses the carpet - not his fault). I simply pick him up and walk out the door, so he understands that peeing and pooing are done outside.

Anyway, good luck. I am no expert, but this has worked well for me.

Silly I think if you use the search feature on the site (link should be upper left portion of the screen) to search for potty training you will fill a load of information that will help you with that. As far as the bed thing goes... I have heard the same as kyles, that it might make your dog aggressive/dominant because in the wild the lower order dogs in the pack sleep lower than top dogs. We didn't let our puppy on our bed for quite some time, but now he sleeps with us. I think it is all a matter of preference. I know lots of people here let their dogs on their beds. I don't really have much info as far as the bathing thing, although, again I remember someone bringing it up so maybe you can use the search feature for that too. Good Luck!!

Congrats on your new puppy! Its always exciting, and frustrating, agrivating, and yep, sooooo worth it.

My advice to anyone getting a new pup would to get all the info and research done FIRST before bringing the puppy home.
Since you did this backwards, there are many books, and links to check out.

Good luck.

Well, I had a frist long night of my new dog pooping/peeing every 2 hours, but I guess he's just getting used to the new surroundings.

Thank you very much for all of your advices!! I know that there are many different ways to tackle this subject, but I guess I'll really try to stick with one and see how it turns out.

As far as now, whenever I catch him in the act of "doing," I pick him up and take him to where he "should" be doing. Hopefully he'll get the idea.

My other concern is that he has very sudden/sporatic movements. Is this normal?? Once again, thank you guys so much for your help. Every advice counts and is greatly appreciated.

I'll post his picture up soon! =)
