Hello all. Nala is crated from 7:45am - noon, and then again until 3:30ish. She's generally fine with it, but sometimes after lunch she is starting to rebel and be difficult to get back in her crate.

She *was* getting better when loose in the house. She hasn't had an accident in a long time, and she hasn't been chewing as many inappropriate things. Lately, though, she has begun stealing items from the computer desks in "her" room (the family room) when we leave her unattended - she did this all the time when she was younger. I assume it is her "teenage" rebellion time, and this too shall pass.

Up until that started happening again, we had left her unattended in her room (but we were still home) for short periods of time. I have left the house for 20 minutes or so and she was fine. We went into the basement for my daughter's birthday party and she was alone for a good part of an hour and she was fine.

Based on this, I was hoping she could be trusted without the crate in a few more months - maybe about the time she turns one year old.

I am now looking for ideas that we can try now, instead of waiting. I want something that would be a transition for her, instead of total freedom. We don't have a good room - like a laundry room - that we could confine her in. The bathroom is tiny, and the kitchen has too much she could destroy. And I do worry about the cats if we are not there to intervene.

Does anyone have any ideas? Maybe she would just like to be in a crate in the family room instead of the bedroom, with the TV on? But what about if the cats tease her...

An ex-pen of some sort? An outside run with a shelter of some sort when the weather is nice?

Any ideas?

I would say put everything away that she can get to into the family room. Can you block this room off? Is she getting the things because she is bored? I would then give her a kong (I think you do this already) filled with the frozen peanut butter to keep her entertained. I would then practice on the week-ends leaving her half hour, then hour then longer. This is what I did with Jake. he was about a year when I could leave him in the house for a few hours. I dont think the cats would be a problem she hasnt attacked them yet. i just hink it is her chase drive and they would just go run and hide

Hi Jamiya, The idea of a dog run outside. Do you have a way of fencing off a part of your yard? Many years ago when clothes lines were still in "so to speak" I had built a dog run around one, then I put a couple of ropes attached to rings on the clothes line with toys hanging from them. My dog just loved it! he could get ahold of the toys and play tug of war or run from one end to the other with it. I know it sounds nuts! but it was pretty neat!

An outside pen gives your pet the fresh air they need also. When the weather is nice of coarse.

I wish I had some better idea's for you, sorry!

Good luck! I know you'll get more here as well.

The family room has a baby gate that blocks it from the rest of the house. We have pretty much lived in this room since we got Nala.

But how can one put away EVERYTHING a dog could get into? The couch? Chairs? Carpet? You get the idea. She is generally not terribly destructive, but if she gets bored and no one is home - who knows.

A frozen peanut butter-filled Kong lasts her for about 15 mintues, tops. I have yet to find any toy that lasts longer. Jumbo bully sticks used to last her for multiple days - now she goes through them in an hour or so, and they are expensive!

It is true she doesn't attack the cats, but one of them is very silly and seems to forget how to get away. She sits there and wails while Nala mauls her and we have to intervene. I suppose it's possible she would learn to get away. Or I could put the cats in the basement - that is probably the best option.

And I have no idea if she would have accidents inside when we are not home. I guess maybe we just need to start leaving her for progressively longer times on the weekends as honeybear suggested - that was my plan to begin with, but then she started stealing stuff again.

My husband is steaming - he had a bad morning and lunchtime with her. He loves her, but he would be just as happy (if not happier) without a dog. I don't even want to talk about his attitude toward the cats. For him, the inconveniences of having pets weigh heavier than the benefits. He's like that.

I know she will keep getting better as she matures. He is forgetting how she USED to act. He just doesn't always see the big picture - I think I learned to when I faced 10 years at home with the children, waiting for them to get old enough for me to go to work. That does things to a person.

Jamiya, sometimes I think we have dogs that are related (except Max is a lab ). I'm always reading these boards, but don't post too often. However, I wanted to post what is happening with Max lately. He has been out of his crate and doing great during the day while we are gone for quite some time now. He seems to be going downhill lately, and I have contributed it to his "teenage" years. The first situation that happened was I left a tube of peanut butter on the counter (bad bad owner), he ate the whole thing, including most of the container while we were gone and proceeded to have the runs all over the house for about 3 or 4 days. OK, so I blamed myself for that because I left the peanut butter where he could get it. Last weekend we took a long weekend and went to Florida, we left him home with a pet sitter,. who said he was fairly good except he eliminated on the rug again (still had the runs). Monday of this week he was fine. Tuesday, we came home and our neighbor, who is 12 and lets Max out in the middle of the day, had left a message that Max had shredded a whole bunch of stuff including some garbage from the can, a candle I had bought for our neighbor, and the $20 bill I left for him. He also pooped in the house 3 times. That same evening my husband let Max inside after he had been out for sometime, and he went upstairs to make dinner. When I came home I noticed Max had eliminated on the floor again. And then the next morning he did it yet again!!
My husband is in an uproar about the whole thing and is threatening to get rid of him if we can't get him trained and acting like a good dog by July (baby coming in August). I am so upset about the whole thing. I think the only logical solution is to put him back in his crate. I think we need to do this for his own safety so he doesn't end up eating anything he shouldn't, but also because he is destroying our house eliminating everywhere. I just feel so horrible about this conclusion because I know how much he hates the crate. He is impossible to get in there even with the best treats (including hot dogs). We literally have to drag him in there because we can't get him in there on his own free will. And now that he has had the taste of freedom I'm so worried about how he'll react when we have to start crating him again.

I guess I just wanted to share that with you so that you can maybe learn from our mistake of letting Max out of his crate too quick, though I realize all dogs (and owners) are different. Also hoping that someone might have some thoughts about this.. do you think he is upset about us leaving him for that weekend? Do you think blocking him off from the Family Room, the room he always elminates in would work? Does the crate sound the way to go?

How old is Max, and how old was he when you started letting him out?

I think you're right and we need to wait until she gets through this teenage period. She goes into her crate okay in the morning, usually. It's after lunch when she doesn't want to and she gets bored.

I may try an outdoor run or something on nice days, so that at least she won't be able to destroy the house if she gets crazy. But I do worry about starting digging issues.

I am thinking about doggie daycare, but I'm torn. Hmmm. I wonder if she could go play at a friend's house after lunch or something. Now that's something to think about.

Max is about 10 months old and I want to say he's been out of his crate for at least a month or so. Just seems weird that he is all of sudden going through this bad period, when he was doing so well lately.

newlabowner, I would checck to see if there is a medical problem, since he hasnt done this before and you said he pooped 3 times in the hous while you were gone. That is an awful lot. Jake and Wylie only go twice a day. And it could be that whatever he ate really messed up his sytem for him to be going that much and tehn to do it int he house. Also I think I have read here that some puupies degress, so you may to have take him out, go out with him and tell him to go. like when he was little to get him re-trained Does max have a command like go potty so something like that.

Jimiya I would start on the yard training just like yo do with the house, only for short periods of time and then longer and longer.

I get knuckle bones for Jake and Wylie and they last months and they dont splinter and Jake is a hard chewer. You might try something like that.

I'll look into the knucklebones. I worry about breaking teeth with those sorts of bones. You haven't had any problems with that? One bad side effect of raw feeding is that now Nala is even better at chewing through stuff, LOL.

I asked a friend and he has his dogs in a pen in the backyard - he said they were really destructive in the yard until he made the pen. I'll have to go look at it.

If Nala doesn't like to be outside, I won't put her outside. But if she likes it better, it just may be a good solution. Or at least until I can trust her inside the house.

I wouldn't worry quite so much if it were just me, but I try to minimize destruction in the house for my husband's sake.

Jimiya, Jake and Wylie have the redbarn meatfilled bones now, I took the center out of it since the only place that has carpet (my dining room) is where they like to chew and I am afraid of staining the carpet. Both Wylie and Jake have a ritual and chew everynight for about 10 minutes. Jake has teeth like jaws of steel, and still the bone is intact. you might want to geive them a try supervised to see if they would work for you. Here is petcos link. I did buy the redbone white bones once (DO NOT GET THESE) and Jake shattered it in a mattered of seconds. It looks like they are processed somehow because they are so white like vacuumed of everything.

Wylie loves being outside but Jake hates it,so I have a dog door to accomate both of their needs so you will just have to try nala and see how she does.

Honeybear - I am thinking the same thing. At first I really thought that this was caused by the over indulgence of peanut butter, but no he is even urinating on the floor. If there is not anything wrong with him medically then I can only think that he has just gotten too used to going on the carpet downstairs (thank goodness we were planning on replacing this carpet in the summer anyways). We have also recently changed foods from Chicken Soup to Canidae. I just feel so reluctant to put him back in his crate he has always disliked it so much.

I would have max checked out, it sjust doenst sound right and it could be the canidae is too rich for him and causing the problems. Innova is a great food and many people have posted here that their dogs cant tolerate it - too rich

We used to feed Innova and he was fine, so I don't think it's the food. We have since tried just closing the door to the downstairs (where he has been going) and he hasn't had any accidents at all. I think the peanut butter thing made him have the runs on the rug and he got used to going there and kinda digressed. We'll see how he is this week. Thanks for the advice.

LOL, that's okay. No, I haven't made any decisions yet. I guess we will just keep using the crate for now. I'm thinking she would not like to be outside, since my husband left her out that one time to go get the kids and she broke the window on the door trying to get back in. Unless perhaps if we had another dog she liked to play with outside... *evil grin*

We left her alone in the family room last night while we went to Blockbuster and then drove to Dairy Queen to get ice cream to go - and she was fine when we got back. I would imagine she would get bored after a few hours, though, once she was done napping.
