Hi!
I was just wanting to ask you a question about when you introduced a new pup to your old... as you know that's what I did.
It's been about a month now, and Bender is so grumpy and growly at Leela, specially in the mornings (not a morning dog!!) but they occasionally play which is good. I am just wondering how long your dogs took to get used to each other- because you mentioned your older dog didn't warm up to the new one for ages, so I'm just wondering approx. how long this was.
PS.. me and my partner are big Monkey fans!!!

Hey there Knobbles =) Monkey is very happy to have a fan club =D
My poodle gets extremely jealous and since I had to treat him so special with all the baby food feedings and his own kennel and everything....she was absolutely going NUTS with jealousy but she never didnt like him. She was always overeager to get my attention away from him (I long ago gave up trying to train her not to jump on my lap at her size) and she always plays too rough with him. I think it took her about two months to really get used to playing with him and learning to be gentle. I had to monitor it closely for a long time since he was under 2 pounds. It got a lot better when I got them an extra large crate and started crating them together....she stopped being so overexcited to play with him when she wasnt separated from him every night.

Eating the same food also helped from the same big bowl. I switched my poodle onto puppy food since she was so skinny in an attempt to fatten her up a little bit so that was feasible for me. I dont know if forcing them together is always a good idea or not but it worked flawlessly for me. If they are at least playing together already that seems like a good sign to me!

Hey Mistress, what's this about a monkey? did i miss something?

Knobbles, Casey isn't old so I don't know if this applies or not but! she was first in our home for 2 1/2 yrs. then came Freebie! At first she would have nothing to do with him at all. (I mean NOTHING) it took about 2months before she would realy play with him. Poor thing! he would try and try to get her to play and she would just snap at him. But NOW they are buddies, always together!

I used to realy worry because Casey is a mini dachshund (long back) but he doesn't hurt her at all...Thank Goodness!

How old is your dog? it's amazing how sometimes having a puppy around will bring out the puppy in the older ones....

Good luck! Hope it all works out for you..

Susan

Thanks for your reply Mistresskela, and your story too Susan.
My older dog is now 2. They are going pretty well, I can't wait for the time when my puppy's all grown up and we can all go to the park together. But of course I am enjoying her beautiful puppy looks! I am just about to head off for our first puppy class...should be fun.
At the moment they are playing together and making so much noise!!! They are making better friends each day! I swear the puppy loves Bender more than me! I don't think that goes the other way though!
My older dog got really jealous about sharing his toys- but I've recently bought some new ones and it seems to have solved that problem, it's as if Bender knows they are "theirs" and not just his.
I went to visit my friend yesterday who has a really friendly dog- loves other dogs and she has just moved in with another girl that has a four month old pup. Her dog acts almost exactly the same way Bender does to the pup... I'm thinking there must be a general way that older dogs treat young dogs... anyway it was quite good to see, because her dog is great with other dogs.

Sounds like your older dog is just letting the baby know who was there first! We had this happen when we got our 2nd dog. It took a while, but we were lucky as Jersey just thought Serene was her new mommy! Even now though, sometimes Jersey will think she's the leader and Serene just puts her in her place! We did a lot of reading before we got Jersey as Serene had an abused past, and we didn't want her to lose her confidence and return to her submissive state. Everything we read said you have to let them sort it out on their own (within reason! Serene did get a little too "tough" a couple of times!) The first night Jersey was home, we got them settled in their room, and Serene dragged Jersey's blanket out of the room. I was quite emotional, thinking they may not like each other, but my husband talked me thru it. It was hard to see Jersey lying on the linoleum with no blankie. I snuck up on them in the morning, and Jersey was on Serene's blanket, and Serene was grooming her. Warmed my heart!!They are now so inseperable, when one goes to the vet, the other has to come along for the ride, as they cry alot if seperated! Good luck!

O.k. Mistress I've got it now! (dog named monkey) Too funny! what i was thinking....

Knobbles, I'm happy to hear it's all working out. When we got Freebie (the second dog) I read that it's a good idea to give the first dog everything first. That way he or she doesn't feel as though they are being pushed aside to make room for the new member. This is what I have always done sinse I got Freebie, it works out well in my home.

Kathy I enjoyed your story about your dogs.
