Oh my gosh! Ranger just got out, and this time, he didn't come back automatically! Maybe it was because he had just waken up from a nap and was hyper, I don't know. Anyhow, I went back in to get his dog whistle, since I am training him to come to that, only, since watching him almost get run over twice, I have yet to be brave enough to take him outside without a leash to try it and see if he comes. Well, I go out there, and in the time it took me to get his dog whistle and a treat, I couldn't find him! I walked all over the neighborhood (which has busy streets on 3 sides, all 3 with easy access to a dog on the loose!) blowing his whistle. Well, finally, when standing on one street, I thought I saw something run through the alley behind me, so I blew it agian, this time it came from a different direction. I called him, and he found me! The poor thing was scared to death (normally is when he gets out, only if he sees you he thinks its a game!) apparently, it took me long enough to find him this time that it was no longer a game. I was so scared, waiting for skidding brakes and a yelp! Thank God I found him! Now he his happy on his beanbag, apparently very happy to lay there and not have to face the big, scary, outside world (our neighborhood has lots of big dogs, and when by himself, Ranger is a chicken ) without a leash and a person!

Whew! So glad he's okay!

Nala got out yesterday. My husband was rushing to the video store to get a DVD returned before it was late, and I asked him to pick up a book I had on hold at the library. But then I thought he might need my library card, so I went running out the front door to try to stop him. Nala is confined to the family room, which is in the other end of the house. But apparently someone had left the baby gate open, and as I turned to go back in the house she shot by me!

She took off chasing my husband's car, who was oblivious to the whole thing. About that time, I started thinking about how she didn't have a collar on. I have started taking it off when she is inside so her fur doesn't get all messed up. She is microchipped, but if she got lost and someone found her who didn't know about microchips they might decide to keep her!

So I was frantically calling her, and she finally came back.

I need her to get good at recalls for her own safety, and also so I can move on in agility. But she gets SO worked up, it's going to take a long time.

oh Sarah and Jimiya - yikes, you are lucky, recall is one of the hardest things to learn. glad to hear they are okay - Sarah one thing you might do, is get a very long rope and go to a park. You start out with the rope short and then keep extending it to where ranger feels he is on his own, and each time you do a recall, tug the rope and blow the whistle. when she comes to you praise him and if he works well with treats give him one as a reward

Has anyone else tried the dog whistle thing? I bought one the last time it came up because I thought it sounded like a good idea, but I haven't tried it out yet. If the ONLY time I ever blow the whistle is when I need her to come and she gets a super duper treat when she gets to me, it just might work. (But what is a super duper treat for a dog that LOVES to run?!)

Anyone else have luck with this?

Wylie had no interest in regular treats when we were doing this, her sense of everything else like running not listening etc was more important and fun, than a treat. I finally found beef jerkey that she loved and it worked well. And I was also told to do the training since I was using treats
before her meals so that would help. YOu just have to find that special something she loves.

Yeah, that is what we do with Ranger, he normally gets human food, like an apple or something he really likes, but today just a milkbone, since I was in too much of a hurry . So glad you got her back Jamiya!
