my puppy will often just lie there and bite his own legs/paws and also sometimes his "little guy" (ouch). it looks so painful, but i imagine if it hurt him he would stop, right? although, that said, he still tries to chase his own tail even though he must know it's attached! is this okay? If he's doing it to excess, it could be fleas or itchy skin due to an allergy. You might want to get him checked out by a vet, just to be sure. If he checks out okay medically, he's probably just playing. Does he have toys and things to chew on? You could encourage him to stop biting his legs by distracting him with an appropriate chew and rewarding him for using it.

oh, he has PLENTY of chew toys...but that doesn't stop him from eating the couch, the carpet, the furniture...i really think it is just playing, but fleas/allergies are exactly what i was worried about. i just had him at the vet not even a week ago --- do you think that's the sort of thing the vet would pick up on even if i didn't ask her to look for it, or do i need to bring him back for her to especially look at that? The vet probably would have caught fleas. Allergies are more difficult. Maybe you could call the vet and describe what is going on and ask if the pup should be seen again. Puppies do like to chew on lots of inappropriate stuff. You need to puppy-proof the part of the house that the pup is in AND never leave him unattended, so that he doesn't have the opportunity to chew on the couch, etc. When he tries, redirect him to his chew toys. It seems endless, but they DO grow out of it eventually, and if they are prevented from chewing on inappropriate stuff when they are puppies, they are less likely to do it as adults. Our puppy wanted to chew on shoes when she was smaller. We never left our shoes in "her" room, and if she did happen to get one we'd take it away and redirect her to her own toys. Now at 9 months we can safely leave shoes out and she ignores them. (Unfortunately for me - I *liked* it when the kids and my husband were picking up their shoes!!)

My puppy bites himself too. I think they just do it to have something in their mouth. He has also had the allergy biting thing as well. You will know the difference between just non-chalant biting of his feet and biting due to allergies & fleas. Or at least on mine you could tell. When it was the allergies, he was really going after it. When he was just biting to bite, he would just lay on his back and sort of knaw on his paw. No point to it. IP: Logged |

My pup chews on her legs and makes play sounds while she's doing it. It's quite cute! Jamiya, I am liking the fact that my partner has to pick his shoes and clothes up off the ground now because of the puppy!!! I'm just hoping this new habit sticks.... IP: Logged |
