Hi,

Does anybody know how much a "registered" veterinary technician makes hourly, &/or annually??

Guesses & Estimates are appreciated too...

Thanks

Hello...i am actually taking a Vet Tech class and the instructer told us the average salary for a registered vet tech is $11-13 an hour, not very much but if you love animals and want to help them, then i think it is worth it. Vets on the otherhand make on average around 60,000-70,000 a year. Of course these numbers can vary. I hope this helps.

I'm not a vet tech, but at my job I make $16.48 per hour and after taxes are taken out (I dont recall the ammount offhand, but about $200 a week), insurance is taken out ($7.00 a week) and 401k plan money is taken out ($32.00 a week) I take home very near $35,000 a year.

The vet techs at the last hospital I worked at made 12 dollars an hour. The lead tech made 12.75. There were no health benefits unfortunately. I was the nighttime "tech" (no license) and I was making 9 bucks an hour.

I was actually looking into going back to school to be a vet tech after I got my English degree, but after looking at their average salaries, which from what I researched were about 14 an hour AT THE MOST, I decided to go to graduate school instead. I know that sounds bad, and I really love working with animals and know I would probably really enjoy being a vet tech, but the money they make is just horrible!! I knew I just couldn't take a pay cut from what I currently make to become a vet tech, though I wish my husband was rich so I could be one and money would be no object

Hi!

Thanks for the replies...

Winnie:
I noticed that you labeled Sherman Oaks.
Just curious, but are you taking the tech class @ LAPC? If so, how do you like their program so far? And, what class is it ? Okay, if i'm asking too many Q's, just let me know, i understand .
I've been seriously considering going to a credited tech school for quite some time now, but the hourly wage even as a registered tech has got my frontal lobe going koo-koo, know what i mean?
Geez, i'm at a certain point in my schooling where i have to make "the big decision". You know, what route i'm going to take , & for what... blah-blah-blah... I'd love to work w/ animals especially canine of coarse, but 1)honestly, i could'nt cut it to be a Vet 2) RVT/AHT's whatever's, don't get respect in their pay checks (& neither do vets) & the loans they gotta pay OMG!!! Sad to say IMO. I hope i'm not discouraging you?!?

Do you know what kinda options in jobs are there if you take the RVT thing all the way to a Baccalaureate? And how much would they make then? I've been considering that too. Or like becoming a professor or something .

Geez, i sound like a $$$ hungry idiot!

I just don't want to put in a whole lot of "life" time of school, when i'm not getting the financial stability that would help complete happiness you know?

I don't know what to do/become... I'm an idiot!!! AAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

What about becoming an RN

Hello...yeah I am taking classes at LAPC...this is my first year in the animal science program. I originally wanted to be a Vet Tech at a hospital but then i changed my mind. I either want to work with Exotic animals at a zoo or maybe even work with horses. I heard that they need people who spealize in certain animals, like large animals and you might be able to make more because they are in high demand, vets and vet techs. If you want to work with animals there are many options that might pay better then a vet tech for a dog and cat hospital. Maybe becoming a behavoirist, i hear really good behaviorist can make good money. Moorpark college has a good program, they also have a great exotic animal program and an actual zoo on site!!! goodluck with what ever you decide to do...it is a hard descion...which I have put off for far to long.

I was going to suggest becoming a trainer or a behaviorist as well. I used to watch the zoo keeper programs on Animal Planet when we first got Nala and thought that would be such an awesome job!

You're lucky you have those programs near you! We have a lot of educational opportunities near us, but vet tech is about the only animal-related one. Most everything else around here that has to do with animals is more about livestock and farming practices (ugh).

hey guys... Thanks again for the replies.

For now, like it's always been for some time now, it's looking like the RVT thing is gonna be it for me. But recently, i've been trying to look into the options/range of opportunities for an RVT that continues with school untill receiving a baccalaureate degree.

The Zoo/Zoologist thing has always been an option i've kept in mind as well.

I'd also love to be an RN, but moreso because of the money. I'd rather wipe the *** of an animal, than that of a greasy homosapien anytime... oOpPsS, did i say that!?

Nah J/K, much respect to both professions! I've just been more of an animal-lover, & can see myself enjoying my work a lot more in that field.

Later...
