Hi, I am a resident of puerto rico, used to live in new york. I have noticed since living here that there is a HUGE dog problem. I mean in the neighborhood that I live in there are only a handful of dogs that I can say have homes and are confined. I mean, if youre going to have a dog at least confine it so the dog will stay out of trouble.

I have a tiny super mutt and she is ALWAYS inside unless its playtime and then she is always insight and isnt allowed to roam. There is this one dog that is always terrorizing the neighborhood, always picking on the other dogs.

And when there is a female in heat things can get super wild. Thankfully there are only 3 or 4 females and about 20 males. The other day this female pup came into her first heat and since I have a field they got in and were barking the for hours until I had to go down and spray them with the hose since they were scaring the horse.

What can I do?
I am told that once in a while people gather and just shoot and poison the dogs but that is horrible! Also, alot of people have fighting roosters and chicks from them and if a dog kills a chick they will poison it or shoot it dead.

Can anyone help me? This is a very serious problem that is affecting alot of people and in a big part me. My little dog is a barker and she will start barking and growling and whynning when she hears these dogs out side and it is horrible. Moving now is out of the question, hopefully by next year I will get married and leave the neighborhood but I dont want to abandon the problem I want to do something about it.

lanena,
You sure do have a serious problem. I did a little research for you and located a web site the Puerto Rico SPCA which you should contact for advice. The web address is: http://www.canadausaspayandneuter.homestead.com/PuertoRicoSPCA.html
Let us know if you receive any information or assistance from that organization.

Good for you! Dukesdad.... I was perplexed as what advise to give her. It sounded like if she called the authorities, they would just kill them instead of helping them.

Ianena, I hope that site that Dukesdad gave you helps you, It is truly hard to understand why people have pets then just let them run wild. And those poor females! they probably have litter after litter because thier so-called owners don't give a ****!

Let us know what happens

Sincerely, Susan

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I thought no one wanted to help with this problem that is plaguing the entire neighborhood. I went to the website and to my surprise Carla Capalli is head of all of this. She is constantly on the news for her numerous cases helping animals. Her latest project is trying to ban nocturnal cock fighting and I absolutetly agree with her.

I looked at the list of shelters and there is one about half an hour from here, I am going to make a personal appearence Saturday because things are done best face to face.

I wish I could take in some of these dogs but my house is full!

Im sorry if anyone interpreted my message differently I was not trying to say the shelters are coming here and killing them. What the people in the neighborhood and from nearby neighborhoods do is they come in a big group and any really agressive dog is shot, and all the others are given sausages soaked in poison. I have never seen this happen but I can imagine how horrible this must be. I had a Border Collie male (he was a bit agressive) so we kept him tied up during the day. One day he broke loose and someone in the neighborhood poisoned him. It was absolutetly heartbreaking when he came home. I swear, he could feel like he was dying and came home to die.

I dont want this to happen to any dog, I just dont want them loose terrorizing my animals and destroying everything. I know must of these dogs are adoptable.

Well I will update! Thanks

Hi Ianena, I'm so happy to hear that you might have an answer to the problem! It is so sad!

I was sorry to hear someone poisoned one of your dogs, that has got to be the cruelest thing that could happen to an animal!

I'm sure you'll get more answers here as well

Do keep in touch and let us know.

Good luck to you! Susan
