I have a malti-poo. We've given her raw hide before and she's never had a problem with it. Recently though, she's gotten into this habit where she'll pick it up in her mouth and fling it. She'll chase after it and pick it up and fling it again and then maybe settle down and chew on it. At first we didn't pay too much attention to that - it looked like it was some kind of halfbaked predatory thing. And then it happened. I was sitting in the arm chair watching TV in the livingroom with her chewing on her raw hide bone at my feet. Then all of a sudden, something gross and slimy and hard hit me in the eye. IT WAS THE RAW HIDE BONE!!! BLEH!

Now, I understand she didn't mean to hit me in the eye. But we realized that her fling the bone can have not so good consequences. We've tried to only scold her when we catch her in the act of flinging it but she seems to think we're trying to tell her that chewing on the raw hide is bad.

Any suggestions?

My lab does the EXACT same thing. I do not know how to correct the problem and honestly I have never tried. I didnt think other dogs did this but I guess that was a stupid assumption. It is weird that they do this...maybe they like playing with their bones before they eat them.

My dogs do this with all sorts of things. it's just play. They are feeling happy and frisky. I don't scold them for it, but I guess if you don't want your dog to do it you can try doing the "ah ah ah" thing when she does and reward when she only chews on it calmly. You also may consider only letting her have the bone in a certain area where it wouldn't matter if she flung it around and played.

Ranger does this too! He has never hit anyone, though. It is incredibally funny when he does it! He will have several different types all over the floor, since he tends to get tired of one and move on to the next, and when he is really hyper, he can never decide which one to chew, so he runs around the house flinging all of his different bones and toys until he finds the one he wants, then he either brings it to me to play fetch, or sits and happily chews on it .

Nala does this, also. We love the way she tosses her toys in the air and chases after them. She does it with the nuts that fall from the trees outside, as well as bones, sticks, rocks - whatever she can find!

I think it's wonderful that she is entertaining herself. I had her at PetSmart in the training pen with a puppy that was up for adoption, and after she realized the puppy wasn't going to play with her, she walked over to the basekt of toys and started rummaging through it. A friend who was with me was impressed that she would go looking for something to keep her occupied, and it was an appropriate thing at that!

So anyway, I have never thought about stopping her from tossing her toys. She's playing!

oooh sure...it's all fun and games until someone pokes an eye out! hahahahaha! We figured it was play or how they treat their toys or food - she only does it with the raw hide though, not anything else. I was just slightly horrified that it landed on my eye. hehehe

Hi Rosie, I didn't mean to say that it was funny that you got hit in the eye with the raw hide, I just meant it was funny when Freebie does it. Don't want you to get hurt! You do understand that, right? Have a good day, and perhaps wear a helmet when you give him one....hehehehe!

I would work on your ducking and dodging skills, if I were you.

I don't think Nala has hit us very often. I think she has managed to land things in the kids' laps before, but they think it is funny.

Perhaps a hard hat and safety goggles would help.

We just grab the tops of whatever glasses of fluids there are in the room and wait for Daisy to get over it. Although I wouldn't like getting it in the eye, we think the behavior is really funny!

My Bendy has inside toys and outside toys.. he flings the rope toys around like mad and they go flying- if this was inside it would be a very expensive game!! Hence the ropes stay outside and he knows it!! Bones and such are also outdoor things- except the food in his bowl. The only toys he has inside are small balls such as tennis balls, he doesn't tend to fling balls around.

My dog doesn't do that, but our neighbors chocolate lab, Morgan, did when she was about 2 years old...but with a live baby rabbit in our yard! I heard my daughter outside yelling for me and I ran out and the poor bunny was being tossed into the air and flung all around the place by the lab. It was squeaking and freaking!
Luckily, the bunny finally hopped to safety, but my daughter was freaked herself!

LOL...Rosie must think we are all nuts! We all think it's funny and telling her to wear a hard hat and goggles or a helmet!!!! Too funny, I can just see Rosie and her husband watching the evening news with hard hats and goggles.

I hope you stick around and post Rosie, I swear we aren't always this bonkers.
